Basketball stayed unbeaten, hockey suffered a pair of tough losses, wrestling posted a shutout and track ran well at the nearby Yale Classic in a busy week of Notre Dame athletics.
Basketball — It was the first three-game week for Coach Jason Shea’s squad and they played well each night to stay undefeated. In a 63-49 win at Shelton on Monday, the Green Knights used a 15-2 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to pull way for the win. Trevon Setzer-Smith led the way with 15 points. Notre Dame then beat Cross on Wednesday led by Jaiden Kimbro’s solid night. Kimbro was part of a big third quarter that saw the Green Knights outscore the Governors, 24-15, to take control of the game. Kimbro made four three-pointers in that frame as part of his 18-point night. The Green Knights (9-0) ended the week with a 72-32 win over East Haven with Zach Laput ‘20 leading the way with 13 points as 10 players scored in the game.
Wrestling — A combination of stellar wrestling by Notre Dame and several forfeits led to the Green Knights beating Cheshire, 76-0,in an SCC dual meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Seven Green Knights won via pin while Notre Dame also won six matches by forfeit as Cheshire did not have a wrestler in that weight class. The team then went on to participate in the Hand Duals on Saturday. Notre Dame went 1-3 on the day beating Wilton, 60-12, in final dual of the day. The Green Knights fell, 59-24, to Bristol Central, 54-23 to Wethersfield, and 40-39 to Ludlowe. Christian Fillion, Jason Kern, Luis Stephenson, Rob Lowe, Gianni Liguori, and Porter Schexnayder all won three matches on the day. Lowe was undefeated at 3-0 on the day.
Indoor Track — The team fared well at the Yale Interscholastic Track Classic which was held on Jan. 11-12 at Yale University’s Coxe Cage. The 4×400 relay team team won its preliminary heat and placed fourth overall and second in Connecticut. The team of Daniel Range, Neel Agir, Christian Panagrossi, and Warren Murphy crossed the finish line in 3:36.92. Only Classical Magnet ran a faster time of the Connecticut schools who participated. Murphy then ran third in his heat and 18th overall in the 300 dash running in a time of 37.03. Jason Sawicki cleared 6-0 in the high jump to place fifth. He also ran fourth in his heat and 26th overall in the 55 hurdles, finishing in a time of 8.66.
Hockey — The Amity hockey team scored two third-period goals to come from behind and beat Notre Dame 2-1 on Jan. 9. The game was scoreless for nearly the first two periods with both goalies matching spectacular save after magnificent stop. Amity’s Malachi Zurolo made 39 saves while Notre Dame’s Connor Smith was just as efficient stopping 37 Amity shots. Nelson Bordeleau scored on a rebound with 3:45 left to provide winning goal. Charlie Andriole scored for the Green Knights to give them a 1-0 lead. John D’Errico was the lone Green Knight to light the lamp in a 3-1 loss at Northwest Catholic on Saturday. .
