WHHS Class of ‘55

The WHHS class of 1955 is celebrating classmates’ 80th birthday this year on Aug. 27. Call Gene (203) 469-4497 or email [email protected] for complete information.

Harugari pig roast

The annual Harugari Pig Roast is set on the club grounds for Sunday, Aug. 27, from 1-6 p.m. on the club grounds, Highland Street. The Adlers  will be performing for your listening and dancing pleasure.  The Harugari Schuhplattlers will also perform traditional German folk dances.German food and bier will be available for purchase. Admission is $5 for adults, under 18 free. CT Beer Trail “Trailblazer” Card Holders receive Free Admission and $1 off each Connecticut Beer purchase. For information, call (203) 933-9930.

14th book sale

The 14th annual Friends of Library Book Sale will be held Friday and Saturday Sept. 8 and 9 at the library, 300 Elm Street, West Haven from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Connie Sacco Meeting Room.  Donations of good used books are needed (please no encyclopedias, textbooks or magazines).  Volunteers are needed beginning Tuesday, Sept. 5th to set up the donated books.  Sign up to volunteer at the Main Library during regular library hours.

NARFE confab

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1 p.m., at the North Haven Congregational Church, 28 Church Street.  All active and retired federal workers and retirees are invited to attend.

The guest speaker will be  Monica James-Brantley, YNHH Geriatric Services & Outreach, Lifeline Program Coordinator.

Alaska trip ‘18

The Ward-Heitmann House Museum is planning a 12-night cruise/tour to Alaska departing Aug. 31, 2018. Tour includes the Inner Passage and Denali National Park. The seven-night night cruise is on Celebrity Cruise Lines ship Millenium, and a five-night land tour will conclude the trip. Fares quoted are for a limited time and range from $2751 to $3781 depending on choice of stateroom. Air fare is additional. Special amenities are available for early booking. Harding Class of ‘52

Plans are finalizing plans for the 65th Warren Harding High School Class of 1952 reunion at the Blue Goose Restaurant in Stratford, Saturday, Sept. 23, from 1-5 p.m. Tickets for the event are $30. WHHS Class of ‘62

The West Haven High School Class of 1962 has scheduled its 55th reunion on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Cielo, 85 Chase Lane. The price is $30 per person and includes a buffet dinner, music, cash bar and custom cars.

Cross Class of ‘52

The Wilbur Cross High School Class of 1952 will host its reunion on Sunday, Sept. 24 from 11:30-4 at Owengo Inn in Branford. Price of $50 per person includes a buffet luncheon. Guests are welcome. For reservations, call John Schatzlein (203) 294-9286 or Joan Vogelsang Ginter, (203) 269-9217.

Used Book Sale

First Congregation Church, 464 Campbell Ave., will host its Used Book Sale, SERRV Shop and Clothes Closet on Saturday, Aug. 26 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. As usual there will be a large selection of gently read books available, including many children’s books, clothing at very affordable prices and articles made by refugees from around the world.

6th Walk and Fair

The West Haven Community House will hold its 6th annual “Family Fun Walk & Wellness Fair” on Sunday morning, Sept. 24, at the Savin Rock Conference Center and Boardwalk. Registration is at 9:30 followed by a Zumba warm-up and a 10:30 kick-off.

The walk will feature a variety of fun activities along the route where participants receive free chances to be entered in a raffle to be held during the Wellness Fair at the end of the walk. Fun activity stations along the walk route include: hopscotch, Simon Says, corn hole bean bag toss, jump rope, spelling bee, limbo, wheelchair obstacle course, and more.

Senior trips offered

F. Seniors and Friends offers the following trips to the public. All trips leave First Avenue commuter lot:

Quincy Market and St. Anthony’s Feast – Saturday, Aug. 26. Bus leaves at 8 a.m., $48 per person;

Big E – Sunday, Sept. 24. Leaves at 8 a.m. $56 per person.

Atlantic City Resorts Casino – Jan 2-4, four meals, two shows, two nights’ accommodation. $219 per person, $50 deposit. Leaves First Avenue lot Jan 2.

Musicians, singers needed

Nutmeg Symphonic Pops Orchestra and Chorale needs musicians and singers. The orchestra rehearses Saturday mornings at 9:15 at Carrigan Middle School and the chorale rehearses Wednesdays at 5:30 at St. Louis Church, classroom wing. The orchestra is seeking string instruments, trombone, trumpet, French Horn, oboe, and the chorale needs all voices, especially men. Coin show

The Liberty Coin Show is back at the Elks Club, 265 Main St., on the third Sunday of the month. Buy and sell your coins. The organizers invite hobbyists to be part of the many displays. Food and beverages are on the menu. For more information, call Parry Carpinella, (203) 248-1053.

Student loans

The Seth Haley Memorial Loan Fund of West Haven provides eligible college students with loans of up to $2500 to help students finish their post high school education. Applicants must be West Haven residents who have completed two or more years of college or post-secondary work or be in their final two years of advanced work. Any West Haven resident attending college or a post high school professional, technical or trade school can be eligible for a loan. Repayments do not begin, and no interest will be charged until one year after graduation.
