‘Matter of Balance’

Sept. 22-28 is Fall Prevention Awareness Week. Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) CareCard Program, YNHH Auxiliary and the Connecticut Older Adult Collaboration for Health (COACH), a project of the Yale School of Medicine is sponsoring A Matter of Balance, Saturday, Sept. 23. This event is designed to teach seniors and their loved ones how to lower the risk of debilitating falls. This free program runs from 9-2 in the Cronin Auditorium on the St. Raphael Campus. Free screenings (by appointment) that can help reduce the risk of falling include blood pressure, balance, medication review, hearing and vision, information, refreshments ,giveaways and free parking.. BP Garden Club

The Bradley Point Garden Club will hold a potluck luncheon followed by Garden Exchange, at noon Sept. 19, West Haven City Hall, 355 Main St. to start the 2017-18 year. New members are welcome. Call Marie at (203) 878-8428.

Apple Festival

The 2017 West Haven Apple Festival, hosted by the First Congregational Church of West Haven on the Green, Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1. We have limited space remaining for crafters, vendors,

WH Garden Club

The West Haven Garden Club will have its first meeting of this year on Thursday, Sept. 14 at the St. Louis Church meeting room at 11:30 a.m.  It will be a pot-luck dish luncheon and meeting to follow.  New-comers are welcome to join us.  For further information call (203) 937-1674.

14th book sale

Friends of West Haven Library will host their 14th annual Book Sale on Friday and Saturday Sept. 8 and 9 at the Main Library, 300 Elm St., between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.  There will be a very large selection of books of all kinds: novels, mysteries, classics, children’s books, non-fiction of all types and audio visual treasures.  Prices are low and on Saturday after 3 p. m. you can fill our bag for $5.
All proceeds from the sale benefit the library programs and passes to museums for patrons.

Harding Class of ‘52

Plans are finalizing plans for the 65th Warren Harding High School Class of 1952 reunion at the Blue Goose Restaurant in Stratford, Saturday, Sept. 23, from 1-5 p.m. Tickets for the event are $30. WHHS Class of ‘62

The West Haven High School Class of 1962 has scheduled its 55th reunion on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Cielo, 85 Chase Lane. The price is $30 per person and includes a buffet dinner, music, cash bar and custom cars.

Cross Class of ‘52

The Wilbur Cross High School Class of 1952 will host its reunion on Sunday, Sept. 24 from 11:30-4 at Owengo Inn in Branford. Price of $50 per person includes a buffet luncheon. Guests are welcome. For reservations, call John Schatzlein (203) 294-9286 or Joan Vogelsang Ginter, (203) 269-9217.

6th Walk and Fair

The West Haven Community House will hold its 6th annual “Family Fun Walk & Wellness Fair” on Sunday morning, Sept. 24, at the Savin Rock Conference Center and Boardwalk. Registration is at 9:30 followed by a Zumba warm-up and a 10:30 kick-off.

The walk will feature a variety of fun activities along the route where participants receive free chances to be entered in a raffle to be held during the Wellness Fair at the end of the walk. Fun activity stations along the walk route include: hopscotch, Simon Says, corn hole bean bag toss, jump rope, spelling bee, limbo, wheelchair obstacle course, and more.

Senior trips offered

F. Seniors and Friends offers the following trips to the public. All trips leave First Avenue commuter lot:

Atlantic City Resorts Casino – Jan 2-4, four meals, two shows, two nights’ accommodation. $219 per person, $50 deposit. Leaves First Avenue lot Jan 2.

Musicians, singers needed

Nutmeg Symphonic Pops Orchestra and Chorale needs musicians and singers. The orchestra rehearses Saturday mornings at 9:15 at Carrigan Middle School and the chorale rehearses Wednesdays at 5:30 at St. Louis Church, classroom wing. The orchestra is seeking string instruments, trombone, trumpet, French Horn, oboe, and the chorale needs all voices, especially men. Coin show

The Liberty Coin Show is back at the Elks Club, 265 Main St., on the third Sunday of the month. Buy and sell your coins. The organizers invite hobbyists to be part of the many displays. Food and beverages are on the menu. For more information, call Parry Carpinella, (203) 248-1053.

Student loans

The Seth Haley Memorial Loan Fund of West Haven provides eligible college students with loans of up to $2500 to help students finish their post high school education. Applicants must be West Haven residents who have completed two or more years of college or post-secondary work or be in their final two years of advanced work. Any West Haven resident attending college or a post high school professional, technical or trade school can be eligible for a loan. Repayments do not begin, and no interest will be charged until one year after graduation.
