Welcome back to Behind the Stacks! We sincerely hope that everyone who celebrated Thanksgiving had wonderful food and a family-filled holiday. Staff here at the library joined in on the fun with our own “Staffsgiving” food frenzy that week, too. Many of us cooked dishes to share with each other. The menu included antipasto, salads, jerk chicken with rasta pasta, BBQ meatballs, baked macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, and cake and cookies for dessert! How lucky we are to have such talented chefs on staff.
As gift-giving season approaches, the library hopes to help Westies get through it stress-free. Do you have gifts to wrap but need a space to sneak away so no one peeks? Both West Haven Library locations will be hosting a Winter Gift Wrapping event.
Bring your gifts and we’ll provide the space and the wrapping supplies! Each location will have some fun activities to keep you entertained while you work, including games and crafts. Listen to music and snack on English-Muffin pizzas at the Ora Mason Library on December 15th, and watch movies and take holiday photos at the Main Library on December 22nd! Registration is required for the events. Feel free to register for both sessions!
The library is thrilled to be hosting local author Robin Cannon who will be discussing her most recent book, Into the Shallows Darkly.
This crime drama is set in 1980’s New England and follows a young attorney investigating the sudden deaths of his uncle’s law partners, convinced that his uncle is the next target. Come enjoy a discussion and light refreshments. Robin Cannon obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fordham University in New York City before embarking on a teaching career. She traveled extensively throughout the world and is an avid reader of Russian history as well as an antiques junkie.
She wrote Tilly Fig, Rye Hill and Fireflies at Nightfall, a trilogy that went on display at the 2017 Book Expo in New York City, as well as The Vanity of Robbers, Pignoli and the Chocolate Thief, Into the Attic Darkly and its sequel, Into the Shallows Darkly. She lives in Connecticut with her husband Bob where she likes to walk the beach, play bocce, and tend to her gardens. Attend one or both of Robin’s Author Talk events on Dec.19 and Jan. 20
As colder weather is upon us, we’d like to remind everyone that the Main Library and Ora Mason both function as warming centers during our hours of operation. If you or anyone you know needs a break and some respite from the cold, please feel free to visit one of our libraries and warm up.
Don’t forget to stop by the Main Library on Saturday, Dec. 13 for our Holiday Haul-Away Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the West Haven Library.
Purchase one or more bags from the Friends for just $10 each and fill it with all the books, DVDs, and/or audiobooks you can fit! All proceeds from these sales help sponsor library programs, museum passes, and so much more. The sale will run from 10am to 2pm.
All West Haven Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day for the holiday. We wish everyone a happy, healthy holiday season!
