A city author, whose last book was very successful, has written a sequel that will make those who enjoy the murder mystery genre and want to see what happens next.
Robin Cannon, a prolific author, lives with her husband. Bob, and likes to take walks along the city’s shore, has penned, “Into the Shadows Darkly,” a continuation of the crime drama penned more than a year ago, “Into the Attic Darkly.”
Called a “character driven novel with a twisty plot,” the new book was dropped on Aug. 15, and will be given the same city sendoff, a book-signing at The Breakwall Restaurant, 305 Captain Thomas Blvd., from noon to 3 p.m.
“I’ve invited Mayor Borer and many other people. It will definitely be an event,” Cannon said.
The book takes up where the first left off.
It’s 1980’s New England and a young attorney named Tom Biggs travels back to his hometown to attend the funeral of his aunt who has died in a horrific car crash. But the circumstances that soon unfold reveal a dark world of corruption and duplicity that grips not only Tom’s uncle but his two law partners as well, the men who helped him to raise Tom after the founder of their firm, Tom’s father, was murdered twelve years earlier.
After the two law partners are both found dead in quick succession, Tom begins a frantic investigation, convinced that his uncle will soon be next. With the help of his girlfriend Clarissa, a crackerjack attorney herself, and a disgraced private investigator, Tom finds the root of the threat, a shady figure from his own past.
Tom and Clarissa rely on the help of the mysterious Blanfurth Consortium to rid Tom’s uncle of the menace that’s had a hold on him for the past twelve years. But when everyone’s moral compass is brought into sharp focus, it’s obvious that no one is innocent of the depravity that has thrown the entire family into jeopardy.
In discussing the new opus, Cannon tried to be informative, without giving too much away
“I can say that Into the Shallows Darkly is an adult murder mystery that’s wrapped in a crime drama. It’s told in both the first and third person. It is a character-driven novel with a twisty plot that embodies both noir and hardboiled characteristics,” she said.
Writing is part of the personae of Robin Cannon. She earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Fordham University in New York City before embarking on a teaching career. She traveled extensively throughout the world and is an avid reader of Russian history as well as an antiques junkie.
She wrote Tilly Fig, Rye Hill and Fireflies at Nightfall, a trilogy that went on display at the 2017 Book Expo in New York City, as well as The Vanity of Robbers, Pignoli and the Chocolate Thief, and Into the Attic Darkly.
Cannon is hopeful the seque to her last book will be just as successful and is using the same premiere location and event to put its best foot forward.
