West Haven Center District Fire Commissioner and Allingtown Volunteer Fire Association Chief John Carew was inducted in the Connecticut State Fire Association Hall of Fame at the organization’s Fourteenth Annual Induction Dinner, held at the Aqua Turf in Southington on April 7th.
Carew, who is also a West Haven 911 dispatcher was accompanied by his girlfriend Kathy Magowan. The dinner was attended by representatives from all three of West Haven’s fire services, career, volunteer and retired.
Carew began his involvement in fire service in 1981, when he joined the West Haven Center District’s Hook & Ladder Co. No. 1 as a young volunteer firefighter. He has served as the Company Captain for many years.
In addition to his work as a first responder, Carew has made a very positive and long-lasting impression on countless young people as he served, with unparalleled dedication for over 20 years as a Plumbing Trades Teacher at the Platt Regional Technical High School in Milford.
A longtime active member of both the New Haven County Fire Chiefs Emergency Plan and the Connecticut State Firefighters Irregulars Association, Carew is renowned statewide for his many years of involvement with the Connecticut State Firefighters Association.
In 2016, he served as the organization’s New Haven County Vice President. He was later elevated to First Vice President and later served as President from 2019-2020. He is currently the organization’s Legislative Coordinator, working full-time with the Connecticut State Senate and House of Representatives, promoting positive legislative actions that would benefit all of Connecticut’s firefighters, career, and volunteer.
