The recent spate of hot weather increased a problem down at Savin Rock and was addressed by city officials over the last several weeks. Vagrancy and use of areas such as the Old Grove Park for homeless people has seen an uptick this summer.
The problem, always one during the summer, seemed to be unusually more rampant with the two heat waves the Northeast experienced in July and August. City Hall officials received complaints, and some residents complained to the Voice, saying they were afraid to walk along the area. One resident sent pictures.
In a statement this week, Mayor Nancy N. Rossi said city officials were aware of the problem, and have taken steps.
“The city has cleared the bushes and cleaned up the area where a resident(s) reported vagrancy. The city will continue to monitor the area,” she said.
Public Works crews trimmed hedges or removed some hedges that were serving as camouflage for tents erected in the area. They also trimmed other vegetation.
“Night life” at the beach has always been a problem, especially in the summer, officials noted. Over the years several incidents have occurred that highlighted the difficulties.
Officials hope the increased monitoring will alleviate some of the fears expressed by residents.

Is the city doing anything to find these vulnerable people in our community a safe place to be? Are they reaching out to offer these people services? We should be showing compassion and empathy to our homeless community.
