On July 1, West Haven Fire Department Historian William Heffernan hosted a fundraiser supporting the WHFD Historical Library. “Coffee with the Historian” was the first in what plans to be a series of fundraisers hoping to help pay for operating costs as well as the acquisition of many WHFD historical artifacts.
Pictured is the James Graham Hook & Ladder scale model Ladder Wagon that was hand crafted by company members in the 1890’s. The model had been missing for over 120 years and was thought to be lost to history. The Historical Library was able to locate it and have it refurbished at great cost.
Also pictured are two white helmets that once belonged to former Chief of Department Joseph Howell (1971-1981). These were also recently tracked down and acquired by the Historical Library. William Heffernan presented the story of the Ladder Wagon’s history as well as giving an overview of what services the WHFD Historical Library provides and its mission and vision for the future.
Captain Jacob Urban introduced Danny the Fire Dog and gave a short presentation on the Department’s newest Canine. Fire Department Coffee, a non-profit organization owned by veterans and operated by firefighters, donated the coffee for the event.
The foundation supports Firefighters who have been injured on the job, either physically or mentally, as well as firefighters who are battling long term illnesses.
Future events are planned.
