The West Haven Community House has announced the opening of its new Early Learning Center, expanding access to high-quality preschool education for children ages 3 to 5 at its main campus, 227 Elm Street.
The Early Learning Center is located in the renovated Upper Lang area, which has been transformed from a before- and after-school program space into a bright, welcoming preschool environment designed to foster learning, creativity, and development.
“This is more than the opening of a building or a classroom,” said Executive Director Marie Watson. “It is the opening of new possibilities for children, families, teachers, and our entire West Haven community. Every child who walks through these doors will be welcomed with care, encouragement, structure, and opportunities to learn, grow, explore, and thrive.”
Serving primarily working-families, the new preschool program builds upon the success of the West Haven Community House’s long-established children’s programs and expands the organization’s commitment to providing high-quality early childhood education.
“For generations, the West Haven Community House has been a trusted cornerstone of our city-supporting children, adolescents, families, and individuals with disabilities while helping people build healthy, productive, independent, and meaningful lives,” Watson said. “The Early Leaming Center continues that tradition by helping our youngest learners build a strong foundation for lifelong success.”
According to Watson, the decision to establish the Early Learning Center was driven by community feedback gathered through a survey conducted last year, which identified a growing need for additional preschool opportunities in West Haven.
“The Early Learning Center reflects our shared belief that every child deserves a safe, welcoming, high-quality place to begin their educational journey,” she said.
Cheryl Swett, Director of Children and Youth Services, emphasized the importance of investing in children during their early years.
“Early learning matters deeply,” Swett said. “The experiences children have during their earliest years help shape their confidence, curiosity, social skills, language development, and readiness for school. When we invest in early childhood education, we invest in stronger families, stronger schools, and a stronger community.”
Enrollment is now open for the new preschool program, and the hours of operation will be Monday-Friday, 7:30am-5:30pm. Children will bring their own lunches, and a nutritious snack will be provided daily.
