Well dearie, it’s hard to believe – and I expeck that’s what the kiddies are saying to themselves – but school stahts here on Monday, and yew can bet the mommies are very happy about that turn of events, even if their little chilluns aren’t. Yup, the summer is continuing its fly-by. ‘Twas funny t’other afternoon, the wag happened to be in for tea and mentioned that we never seem to say that winter “flies by,” but we always say it about summer. Why d’ya suppose that is?
Here in the Asylum by the Sea, things are gearing up for the Sept. 12 primary betwixt hizzoner and Nancy Rossi. Of course, there were some around here who were wondering why there can’t be a Kumbya moment and everyone jest get along, but those people obviously haven’t been around these parts very long.
As we tried to explain to them, the Demmies in this berg have been fighting amongst themselves for more years than any of us can count. I’ve told yew before, this era has the Borer, what used to be called the Picard, and the Morrissey factions. In years gone by, it was the Roper, Johnson and Allen factions. Depending on how things were going or who got up on the wrong side of the bed back then, two of the factions coalesced into the leaders for a while. Then they had a partin’ of the ways, and new alliances worked their way into play. Right now, the Morrissey faction is running the show after being on the outs for a few years. It’ll turn around somehow, someway, and in a few years, it won’t be the Morrissey faction, it’ll be something else. The more things change, etc.

Of course, right now Nancy Rossi and hizzoner aren’t exactly going to be sending each other Christmas cards anytime soon. Regardless of what happens on Sept. 12, it looks as if Nancy-gal will be on the ballot with her not-so-well-named “A Better Way Party” having a line on the ballot.
Listen, what goes around comes around in politics sooner or later. It seems to me that the people now supporting a third-party run by said Rossi and her team are the same ones that were crying to the highest heaven against setch a thing a dozen years ago. “Two bites of the apple” was the phrase used back then.
Effen we ain’t learned anything over the last few months with the nonsense in Washington and the Republicans who were for repealing Obamacare until they were against it, is that politicos will use anything to make the other side look bad, and seem to have amnesia when it comes to their own behavior some time later. It’s all part o’ the game that they play. They also expeck that the public aint’ gonna remember that far back – and they’re usually right.

Sammy Bluejay seemed to notice that this election has two people who can be described as somewhat similar. Over the years we’ve noticed – and Sammy pernted it out – that both Mr. O’Brien and the Mistress Rossi like to get the last shot in. They wanna be the last woid you heard or would remember.
So, they keep playing this game of “Can You Top This” – yeah, just like the old radio show – and they wanna be able to respond to each and everything that was said by t’other. Of course, for the papyrus it is a good thing cuz it creates headlines and stories. It’s also grist for the two of us to gossip about each week.
But effen there is one thing both personae like to do, it’s get the last word in, and they can’t take it when they ain’t the one doing it. Come to think of it, that’s like most politicos, so Cobina shouldn’t be too surprised by it, should she?

Of course, Nelly Nuthatch sez that the primary couldn’t go off without having some type of extra-curricular activities. It seems that one candidate that petitions, ostensibly on his own, sent in his petitions and was gonna be able to displace one of Rossi’s candidates on the B line. It’s an old trick used in these parts. Get more than one petition candidate, and the foist one in gets the choice spot, whilst t’other gets put down another notch.
Well, it seems it didn’t work cuz the petitions for said candidate allegedly were put out by some who were not living in the districk in question, and one was not even registered with the party. Why that makes any difference I don’t know. Yew hafta remember, these rules are there to inhibit candidates, not make them come outta the woodwork. I guess said candidate has been disqualified for not having enuff signatures. Nelly knows more about than I do.

Iva Lootey tells me that many eyes, particularly those on the thoid floor of the Actors Colony are gazing toward Hartford. Some six weeks inta the new fiscal year, and our li’l ole blue state still don’t have a budget. Education funds have been somewhat held up, and we know that aid to cities and towns has been corked as well.
Like I told yew, when the MFAC met a few weeks ago, the parting shot was something to the effeck that the city would do itself well to figger out where cuts can be made should things not woik out in the capitol. Even then, there was some speculation that any budget deal is gonna see slashing of funds to cities.
Whilst some are saying the city is “safe” from any cuts that might come down the pike, there are others who think we’re running a fool’s errand effen we don’t do something and do it toot sweet. The sweat is starting to show on the brows of various and sundry at the corner of Main Street and Campbell Avenue.
Still, the word from Hartford now is that there’s gonna be some tax increase after His Excellency the Governor said to all who would listen any budget deal would be “revenue neutral.” Like I said above, politicos hope people don’t remember things.

With school opening, yew might be interested to know that in the case of Vic Hogfeldt v. West Haven Bored of Ed the “deposition phase” is said to be nearing the mark. Madama Olga was peering in her crystal t’other day and told Cobina that there is one thing that is scaring teacher and administrator alike, and that is the “deposition phase.”
One of the reasons could be that even amongst the magisterial classes they see that up to now you’d hafta be barmy to think Vic has got a fair shot. The Kangaroo court they had a few weeks back – an arbitration hearing he said he didn’t want nor would attend – was held anyway. His request for an open hearing – one where all the dirty laundry could be aired – was nixed by a silent response.
Well, in the law methinks the phrase is “Qui tacet consentire:” He who is silent consents. All the consenters are now subject to scrutiny and the inquest by the barristers representing Vic. It could get very interesting. Who knows some secrets may come out in the process. When you get people behind closed doors and under oath, anything can happen.

I’ll put in my plug for the WestFest that is happening the weekend after this, sponsored by UNH, and hope that many of our townspeople get out there. It should be an interesting town-gown event.

With that bit o’ chatter, I’ll close this time till next, mitt luff und kizzez,
