Well, honeybunch, tiz the latter days of Awgus and summer is rolling to its inevitable close. Yeah, we got about a month left before it’s officially over; but let’s face it, once the kiddies are back in school in a bit more than a week, things start on the uptick. Heck, the University o’ New Haven is having kids move in this week, that means things will start perkin’ up there, and it’s only a matter o’ days before things get back into the non-summer swing o’ things.
Summer has soooo much promise, and it seems to roll by us soooo fast. As I always remind yew, granny used to say once we get past May the year jest flies by. Well, before you know it, the snow will be flying and the holiday season will be upon us.
The only thing to say is at least this fall will be a bit more normal – maybe about 90 percent so – than it was last year. That’s a good thing. Now, if the politicians who wanna keep their power, and the media, who wanna produce panic porn, would jest take a breath, we might actually get back to normal. Maybe that’s what they’re afraid of…
OK, from the looks o’ things we are readying for a Demmie primary, and whatever the GOP is gonna have. I say that cuz it looks like the lines have been drawn, and campaigns have begun the march toward a vote next month in the Demmies’ side o’ the aisle.
As yew remember, the GOP candidates’ slate was nullified as the “endorsed” slate because of some filing SNAFU – and we all know what that stands for – with the need to go through the petitioning process. So, it looks like there’s gonna be a vote to see witch candidate, Barry Cohen or Steven Mullins, will be the “endorsed” candidate for the Nov. 2 general election. Not sure effen yew call it a primary cuz there ain’t now standard-bearer as setch.
Sammy Bluejay who follies these things a bit, says that the GOP whilst being the minority party in town ain’t impervious to the in-fight or two. It seems that whilst there was an endorsed slate coming outta the caucus before the aforementioned SNAFU, there are a lotta ill feelings amongst the party faithful.
That’s always been the difference betwixt the Demmies and GOP, even on a national level. The Demmies will kick and bite and scream during a primary, calling their opponents all kinds o’ bad names. Once the candidate is determined, they rally about that person – at least for public consumption. The GOP not so much. Traditionally, the people in that party kind of take their ball and go home, not to be seen during the general vote.
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen this time round, but Cobina won’t be holding her breath. Remember that sentence we all had to master in typing class when we were on our respective Underwoods? “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party,” it went. That was a way to see effen our typing skills were up to snuff. Well, in real life, we will see who are the “good men” and what “aid” they bring…if any.

As I alluded to above, the kiddies are scheduled to go back to class with a full day on Aug. 30. That’s more like what the school system has been doing for the last decade or so, getting in a few days before Labor Day. Last year, cuz o’ the COVID situation, schools didn’t open until the day after Labor Day…like they did when we were kiddies.
Tennyrate, as we write this missive, the people at the various bus companies are finalizing their bus runs, teachers are moving into classrooms to get themselves situated, stores are getting ready for the annual tax-free week, and the kids are perty much hating every minute of it. That means things really are getting back to normal.
Nelly Nuthatch was by the high school t’other day, and sez that demolition and renovation work still seems to be going on over there. Something is happening to the B wing of the old building, either they are renovating it or tearing it down, can’t figger out which, and it seems a new construction is being set in place…the guard shack. Funny, that was the foist thing torn down before the new school, and it seems to be the last thing put up. Funny how that works.
Meanwhile, Nelly was fluttering about and sez that other buildings are getting solar panels and some are getting their lots paved, and other amenities in the final weeks of the summer. It all boils down to the new year is ready to commence.

Speaking of paving, it’s still going on, and so are new sidewalk constructions. Yew can’t traverse certain parts of the city without traffic being backed up cuz paving is going on. And they come up so sudden-like. Cobina was out in the gassamobuggy (it’s a Stutz Bearcat, yew know), and had to circumvent all the paving she saw going on. I guess with the hot weather, they wanna get as much done as possible before the cold – and the frost-heaves begin.
But whilst we’re on the subjeck, Iva Lootey told Cobina t’other day that Beach Street is going to get further work done on it come October. Remember I told yew that part of it was paved earlier this summer? Well, the woid is that in two months the work to raise the roadbed is gonna commence.
That area was earmarked for the work about four years ago, with the last big storms that came through. Even though they weren’t hurricanes, the floodin’ that came about especially, near the old Chick’s Restaurant, brought about the thought to raise the roadbed.
A similar thing happened about a quarter-mile away where Beach Street goes into First Avenue near the sewer treatment plant. That roadbed was raised up cuz the flooding over there by the salt marshes was getting more and more common. Anytime we had more than a spring shower it seemed the road was closed. That work took more than a year, and was a bit of a pain in the ankle for the surrounding neighborhood.
Once wonders what will happen along the Beach Street area once the work continues. It is a bit of an artery over there, and closing it will be a hard pill to swallow for the neighborhood and those trying to get into and out of the city via the shore route. It might be that the road will be better, but we’re gonna haft go through a rough patch to see it get done.
And, with the Chick’s property being sold for jest under a million smackers the new owners probably wanna get things underway with their new construction. The old building is supposed to be razed and a new one built.
We also hear that the Debonair Motel property was sold even though there’s still a “for sale” sign out there. The Wag told us that, but we ain’t seen anything to corroborate it. That would be two big properties outta the way of the three that are on that drag.
It might be that the former Captain’s Galley property jest stays the way it is for the time being. Remember, the owners of that eatery only owned the restaurant, not the land. That might be the snag that is holding everything up.

With that bit o’ chatter, I’ll close this time till next, mitt luff und kizzez,
