The newly elected members of the West Haven Democratic Town Committee elected officers at the organizational meeting March 14 at City Hall. The 60-member panel is comprised of six members from each of the city’s 10 districts.
The Town Committee, which is made up of the candidates that swept in during a March 6 primary, elected all nine officers unanimously.
As expected, former Councilman-at-large and current City Treasurer Michael Last was chosen as chairman; Kathy Tucker was named vice-chairman; Christopher Suggs – 2nd vice-chairman; Cebi Waterfield – secretary; Patty Horvath – corresponding secretary; Victor Borras – treasurer; Peter Massaro – assistant treasurer; Caitlin Maloney – public relations officer; and Rachel Solveira – webmaster and social media officer.
The Town Committee Members set and execute the policy of the local party. It will be busy this spring and summer as many will participate as delegates to the state democratic convention, which will choose statewide democratic endorsed candidates including races for US Senator, Governor, Secretary of the State, Comptroller and Attorney General. The committee will also choose delegates for local state representative races in the 115th, 116th and 117th assembly districts, as well as the 10th and 14th state senatorial races.
“I am humbled and honored to be chosen to lead the West Haven Town Committee for the next two years. We have many new faces and a lot of energy on this town committee, which is exciting. We have an important responsibility, which is to represent the more than 12,000 registered democrats in West Haven. We have to build an open and transparent organization that is inclusive to all democrats,” said chairman Michael Last. “Unifying the Democratic Party will be an important goal. I know every two years someone stands up here and promises to try and unify the party—but I want this group to actually make it happen. Our actions will speak louder than our words when it comes to unifying the party and being inclusive to all Democrats.”
The Democratic Town Committee will hold its first general meeting on Wednesday, March 28 and will be inviting some statewide and local candidates to speak. The meeting will be held at City Hall in the Harriet North Conference Room on the second floor beginning at 7 p.m. All Democrats and residents are welcome.
