Dear Eleanore Turkington:
The fire hydrant at 69-73 Kelsey Street was replaced a few months ago. It is now a bright yellow and no longer commemorates the 911 tragedy. Can this be repainted to do so? Does the Elm Street Firehouse have the authority? If not, who does? I think its important to not forget the happenings of that fateful day.
Sarah Murphy
Dear Sarah Murphy:
I sought information on the painting of fire hydrants to assist you and my readers reasons for this activity They ae instruments of rescue as well as a factor in reducing building destruction.
The painting of red, white and blue hydrants during the 911 tragedies was truly a symbol of remembrance. However, it is legal for the fire department to paint them. According to sources of information, the fire departments can choose the colors that usually r coordinate the hydrants to reflect how much water pressure is available.
Fire hydrants are usually painted a bright yellow and the reason for this is they are eye-catching colors, enabling the fire personnel to react quickly when seen.
Dear Eleanore Turkington:
I am complaining about the gauntlet at Gilbert Street. I work in the Shemitz Building and when exiting there I take my life in my hands everyday. People constantly run the red light at high speed. Often they run both lights at Gilbert Street and Front Street.
John Sullivan
Dear John Sullivan:
I have notified Councilman Peter Massaro of this very dangerous situation. Please don’t hesitate to let me know if there has been a change here. I feel there will be an improvement.
Dear Eleanore Turkington:
We are hoping Public Works has it in the budget to clean the numerous sections of our street , Hillcrest Avenue, of the crumbling asphalt, especially before winter as we have been dealing with this hazard for at least three yeas.
Last winter a big chunk of this debris got stuck in my neighbor’s snowblower. Unfortunately, it got plowed up by public works snowplow drivers. It gets spread all over the grass and sidewalk.
Sadly they drive by this mess daily as Hillcrest Avenue is one of the preferred routes back and forth to Public Works. Thanks for any help with this situation.
