Dear Eleanore Turkington:
A car has been left on the corner of Washington Avenue and William Street. As a parent of small children it is a safety hazard with fluids leaking, tires missing, brakes digging into the street and the trunk is ripped off. Please tow it; it is unsightly and a safety hazed. It is ready to tip over.
Resident of Washington Avenue
Dear Resident:
Your abandoned car complaint has been taken care of. As soon as I read of your concern over a dangerous, damaged car in your neighborhood, I contacted the police department and Councilwoman Bridgette J. Hosike who promptly replied, “The route to go is to contact the police. I followed up with the traffic division.” The car has been removed.
Dear Eleanore Turkington:
I am really a frazzled motorist. I drive on Derby Avenue every day and I would like to ask you to see if you could get a big pot hole fixed at 500 Derby Ave. All of the drivers who use this road every day, would, I am sure, appreciate it if you could get this pothole filled.
EO. Derby Avenue Commuter
Dear EO:
I asked Councilman Peter Massaro (your district representative) to look into this complaint. His reply, “Hello, once again, Gripe Vine (readers) For everyone’s information, Derby Avenue is a state road.”
Gripe Vine Readers, I reached out to the Department of Transportation for assistance with this gripe. As soon as I hear from a DOT Transportation representative with a reply indicating a repair, you will read it in this column. Meanwhile, those of you who travel Derby Avenue, let me know within or a week or so if the pothole is still there or not and I will follow through with DOT.
Dear Eleanore Turkington:
There is a 1960’s Chevy straddling the sidewalk every day (for years) on Atwater Street, half in their driveway and half over the public sidewalk thereby illegally blocking pedestrians right-of-way. If the car’s owner would just pull up into the driveway, rather than over leaving the back end of the car over the sidewalk, it would be really helpful for the folks that walk on the sidewalk.
Mike M, Atwater Street
Dear Mike M:
I asked your Councilman Aaron Charney to look into your gripe. According to Councilman Charney, “I’ve driven by twice, hoping to see which address the (truck) car is parked at. I’ll keep trying. In the meantime, I’ll find out if this is a complaint for the Police Department or blight/property maintenance.”
I had also asked Councilwoman Bridgette Hoskie for assistance with this complaint and evidently, the car wasn’t seen anywhere.
So…to the reader who complained of this problem contact Gripe Vine ([email protected]) and let me know if there has been any change; this would be appreciated.
Dear Eleanore Turkington:
Is it true that we shouldn’t put shredded paper in the recycling bin?
Ethyl, Office Employee
Dear Ethyl:
I checked with the state’s regulation on recycling procedures. Here is the latest for shredded paper.
“KEEP OUT” of recycling bins and place them in the trash. Dust created by shredded paper causes issues at recycling facilities.
While I am at it, readers, here are a few other recycling tips I spotted while researching this inquiry.
If you have bottle caps on the bottles, they can go in the IN if there are loose caps, they are OUT and should be put in the trash. Plastic bags, Keep OUT of recycling bins and OUT of the trash. Plastic bags and other plastic wrap items, should be kept separate and taken back to one of the many retail locations that accept them. Sorted plastic bags and wraps are a valuable commodity as they can be used to make outdoor decking material www.plasticfilmrecycling.org
Coming up…trash and racoons on Morse Avenue…malfunctioning traffic light on Campbell Avenue and Lamson Street…potholes on Pine Street…potholes on Sorenson Road…sidewalks on William Street east of Peck street…pothole on Peck and Leete…crater on Burwell Place Road…
