With wrestling and indoor track now complete, Notre Dame is down to three winter sports teams still competing. Basketball fell short in SCC championship Game, hockey wins its regular season finale, and swimmers place 11th at SCC Championship Meet.
Hockey — Playing sound defensive hockey and getting great goaltending from Nicholas Piselli and Connor Smith, the Notre Dame hockey team won its second game in a row as it beat ND Fairfield, 2-0, on Feb. 26, to end the regular season with a 10-9-1 record.
The Green Knights used a pair of third-period goals to beat the Lancers. Kevin Millea struck first early in the third period and Tom Ashmore scored late to seal the win. Piselli and Smith combined to make 22 saves in the shutout win. Notre Dame opened CIAC Division I state tournament action when they hosted Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Tuesday.
Basketball — The Notre Dame basketball team entered the SCC Championship Game on, Feb. 27 looking for its first crown since joining the league when it was formed in 1994.
Instead, it was Cross who walked away with a 54-40 win and its 8th league title. It was the second win in 12 days for the Governors over the Green Knights.
The Green Knights got off to a slow start, incurred foul trouble by its SCC Player of the Year Connor Raines, and shot only 31 percent from the field for the game. That led to a 12-point halftime deficit. Notre Dame got within five and then six early in the fourth quarter, but then went over six minutes without a field goal, ending any hopes of a comeback. Notre Dame opened up CIAC Division I state tournament play on Wednesday.
Swimming — Keyed by four swimmers, Notre Dame placed 11th at the SCC Championship Meet held on Feb. 27 at Southern Connecticut State University. It was the quartet of William Hinckley, Jonathan Farricielli, Sean McDermott, and Alexander Ozonoff leading the way.
That grouping earned the Green Knights highest finish when they medaled in the 200 medley relay event that opened the meet. They swam in a time of 1:48:20 to place fifth overall. They also finished 10th in the 400 freestyle relay. Hinckley also had the best individual finishes – 9th in the 100 freestyle and 14th in the 200 freestyle.
