It’s certainly not spring-like weather but four of the five Notre Dame spring sports teams were in action last week. Only golf has yet to start its season but the cruel weather hasn’t allowed the courses to open yet.
Baseball — The baseball team split a pair of games, the second of which was an impressive 4-2 win over 5th-ranked Westhill on Saturday, April 7 in a game played at West Haven HS. Mike Sansone allowed only four hits and struck out five in picking up his second win of the season earning a complete-game win. Notre Dame erased a 2-0 deficit with a pair of runs in the second inning while scoring the go-ahead run on a Viking wild pitch. Jack Milone scored winning run and added two hits and an RBI. The Green Knights suffered their first loss of the season, falling 4-3 to North Haven on April 5. The Green Knights had leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but allowed three unearned runs to tie the game. The Indians then plated a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to emerge victorious. Max Ferrucci had an RBI triple that gave ND a 3-2 lead.
Lacrosse — Coach AJ Alessi’s lacrosse quad also split a pair of games but did it in reverse order of the baseball team. They beat Law, 17-4, on April 4 before falling, 6-5, in a thrilling game with Barlow the next day. Ben Hassen had three goals to lead the Green Knights against Law. All totaled 11 different players scored in that game. Zachary Hochman recorded the hat trick against Barlow but the Green Knights gave up two late goals after taking a 5-4 lead midway through the fourth quarter.
Tennis — In brutal early spring weather conditions, the Notre Dame tennis team swept the four singles matches on its way to a 5-2 season-opening win over crosstown rival West Haven on April 5 at Painter Park. Bryant-bound Andrew Forchetti won his match beating James Delgado, 6-0, 6-0. Fellow senior Andre Singer beat Joseph Delgado, 6-3, 6-4 while the third senior singles player Eric Harkins defeated Kent Dimaisip, 6-2, 6-4. Oliver Shannon also won his singles match beating Jeremy Tammaro, 6-0, 6-1. In doubles action, the Green Knights won one of the three matches. Rory O’Connor and Brendan Canning beat West Haven’s Zach Kernzer and Riyad Al Bakri in come-from-behind style, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.
Track — Nick Petruzzelli, Warren Murphy, and Carlos Aurora all qualified for state meets in the first meet of the 2018 season for the track team. Petruzzelli cleared 11-feet in the pole vault while Murphy and Aurora both qualified in the 200-meter event in the meet against crosstown rival West Haven. Notre Dame won the meet to move to 1-0 on the young season.
