The soccer team won a pair of games, cross country captured the Neubauer Invitational, and the football team rallied for a win over Amity in a successful week for Green Knight athletics.
Cross-Country — Ohm Patel ran fourth overall as Notre Dame placed four runners in the top nine finishers to win the Neubauer Invitational. Patel was in the lead pack most of the way and finished in a time of 17:43. While Jacob Carson, Oliver Shannon, Gabe Quinn crossed the finish line next, the race came down to a strong finish by Kevin Sevigny. The Wallingford native ran in a time of 18:44 to place sixth for Notre Dame and 12th overall helping provide Notre Dame with valuable points to ultimately finish first as a team. Notre Dame ran its final dual meet of the season against rivals Hamden and Xavier in preparation for the post-season portion of their schele over the next couple of weeks.
Football — The football team proved why football games are four quarters, scoring two touchdowns in the final frame to rally for a 14-7 win over Amity in a game played in the afternoon on Friday as a precautionary measure to the EEE mosquito situation. Tommy Candelora intercepted a Ben Iwaszkiewicz pass and returned it 38 yards for the winning score with just 3:30 left in the game. Trailing 7-0 after the third quarter, Notre Dame tied the game on a fourth down touchdown pass from Jackson Zalinsky to Amadou Kamara. The duo connected from 22 yards out.
A defensive battle all game, Amity scored on a three-yard run by a Joe DiGello with 4:49 left in the second quarter. Notre Dame gets a bye this week before returning to Veterans Field to host Bunnell on Friday.
Soccer –Thomas Ellis scored a season’s worth of goals over three games last week as the Notre Dame soccer team won back-t0-back games to improve to 3-5 at the halfway mark of the season. Ellis scored two goals in a 4-0 win at East Haven on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
That was just a prelude to his four-goal outburst against Career two days later. The Green Knights needed each of those goals in their 4-3 win. Notre Dame lost to Cross, 4-2, on Sept. 30. Yes, Ellis had a tally in that game as well scoring seven goals for the week. The Green Knights hosted West Haven on Monday in their second meeting of the season before taking on East Haven and North Haven to close the week.
