It was another busy week for the winter sports teams even though swimming had only one meet and hockey was in midst of 10-game layoff. Track runs third at SCC West, basketball stays unbeaten, and wrestling has successful week in both of their meets. Get your updates below.
Basketball — Notre Dame won the 12th and 13th games of the season with a pair of wins over Guilford and Career last week. The Green Knights ended the week with a 58-43 win at Career where Jaiden Kimbro led a quartet of double figure scorers with 13 points. Kimbro, who had been battling a cold, went on a personal 8-2 run to start the fourth quarter as Notre Dame increased their lead from 39-30 to 47-32. Against Guilford on Jan. 22, defense carried the Green Knights, who got off to a slow start and trailed until midway through the second quarter. Jimmy Zanor’s three-pointer gave Notre Dame the lead for good and the defense allowed only 13 second half points asd they pulled away for a 77-41 win.
Wrestling — The wrestling team had a successful week winning a dual meet over Shelton and then finishing fifth at the Rodney Smith Invitational Saturday. Alex Barbour paved the way for a successful day at the Rodney Smith Invitational in East Windsor. Barbour won his weight division to help lead the Green Knights to a fifth place team finish scoring 101.5 points for the meet. Barbour, who won the 182-pound division, was one of seven Notre Dame wrestlers to reach the semifinal round. Barbour won his championship match by fall in the first period over his Montville opponent. Against Shelton on January 23, Kevin Sevigny pinned his Shelton opponent to clinch a close win, 45-33, over the Gaels. Chris Fillion and Gianni Liguori also claimed key wins for the Green Knights, which has also won five matches by forfeit in the SCC Division II win.
Indoor Track — Warren Murphy was part of two winning events as the Notre Dame Indoor Track team placed third at the SCC West Sectional on Jan. 23 at the New Haven Athletic Center. Overall, the Green Knights won three events and had a top three performer in nine of the 15 events. Notre Dame garnered 73.5 points to finish third. The Green Knights improved their finish by three spots from the 2017-18 season when they ran sixth at the same event. Murphy won the 300 meter event in a time of 36.24 and later partnered with Daniel Range, Neel Agir, and Christian Panagrossi to win the 4×400 relay event. The quartet crossed the finish line in 3:34.67. Murphy also ran the opening leg for the 4×200 relay team that placed third. Jason Sawicki won the high jump clearing six-feet. He also placed third in the 55 meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds. In the 55-meter dash, Carlos Aurora continued his stellar running by finishing second in 6.72 seconds. All totaled, 17 student-athletes and four relay teams finished in the top six and qualified for the SCC Championship Meet on Friday at the New Haven Athletic Center. Notre Dame will have a competitor in 14 of the 15 events at the SCC Championship Meet.
Swimming — Alex Ozonoff won three events but the Daniel Hand swim team emerged victorious with a 97-78 SCC win over Notre Dame at the Albertus Magnus pool on Jan. 21. The Green Knights captured five of the 12 events during the meet. Ozonoff won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.35 and 500 freestyle in 5:20.64. He then teamed with Sean McDermott, Malachi Blatchley, and Gavin Kanlong to capture the 400 freestyle relay in 4:11.90. The other two Notre Dame wins came courtesy of McDermott in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.35. Bill Hinckley won the 100 backstroke in 1:04.90.
Hockey — The hockey team had the week off and in fact are in the midst of a mid-season 11-day hiatus. They returned to action last night, hosting Greenwichand will host Hamden on Saturday in a 5:30 game at the Bennett Rink.
