The Notre Dame spring sports teams entered the final week of regular season play as their seasons quickly head into post-season mode. Yes, the springs sports season goes that fast!
Baseball — The baseball team ended the regular season losing all three of its games. The Green Knights concluded a 12-8 campaign with a loss to Hamden (7-4), Xavier (4-0), and Amity (8-3). ND mustered only four hits against Hamden before being shutout against Xavier the next night. On Senior Night, they fell behind 3-0 to Amity in the first inning and never recovered. The season will continue as they won their division and will participate on both the SCC and CIAC postseason tournaments.
Golf — The golf team concluded a 13-3 regular season with a sweep of the week, including a win over xavier at Portland GC for the first time in recent memory. The reward, a trip to Dairy Queen on the way home. Tommy Rosati carded an even-par 35 as did Jake Ivan-Pal in the six-shot win. Notre Dame needed its season with a comfortable win over Branford where Ivan-Pal and Rosati shot 1-under par 34s to lead the way. The team will participate in the SCC Championships (May 28, 2019) and CIAC Division II Championship (June 3) to end its season.
Lacrosse — The number three came into play various times in the Notre Dame lacrosse team’s final game of the 2019 season against Shelton on May 15 at Veterans Field. Notre Dame used three goals by Zachary Hochman in a 9-3 win to clinch an elusive SCC Tournament berth. The third time was the charm as the previous two seasons Notre Dame lost its final regular season game and was denied an SCC berth. The Green Knights played Hand, and fell, 13-6, in the opening round game played on saturday. Michael Card and Jack Luzzi scored two goals apiece. Notre Dame will open CIAC Class M tournament play on May 29.
Tennis — Tennis went 1-2 on the week but the win was a thrilling one. Brendan Canning and Pranav Kuraganti had the decisive match on their racquets in the tennis team’s matchup with Law on Tuesday afternoon at the Law Courts. With the match tied 3-3, Canning and Kuraganti calmly defeated Law’s Brian Zukel and Julian Roy, 8-6, in pro-set scoring to win the match, 4-3. The Green Knights ended the week falling to Xavier and Branford.
Track —Notre Dame’s depth proved to be the difference as the Green Knights track team laid claim to the SCC West Sectional at Bowen Field on Wednesday, May 15. Notre Dame had 22 athletes from 13 different events finish in the top six as the Green Knights tallied 142 points to easily out-distance runner-up Hamden. Notre Dame won only two events, but had top three finishes in eight of the 13 events they placed in. Jason Sawicki won the high jump and Maxwell Bothwell won the pole vault to help lead Notre Dame to the team title. Sawicki cleared 6-4 in the high jump, while Bothwell cleared 12-0 to win the pole vault.
