Basketball starts postseason with two wins over Cheshire and Cross, hockey goes 2-1 with a senior night win, swimming closes regular season and wrestling has two compete at CIAC State Open.
Basketball — ND basketball won its first two SCC playoff games beating Cheshire, 63-34, before upsetting top-seed Cross, 59-56, in the quarterfinal round. Zach laput led ND with 15 points and Jaiden Kimbro made five of six free throws in final 20 seconds as ND held off late-charging Cross in quarterfinal round. In win against Cheshire, the Green Knights used an 18-2 run mid third-quarter to pull away with the win.
Hockey — Mike Bencivengo recorded a hat trick and added an assist as ND used four-goal second period to build 5-0 lead en route to a 7-1 win over Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Senior Day on Saturday. The night before they fell to Ridgefield, 5-2, and opened the week with a tidy 5-1 home win over Darien. They ended the regular season playing ND-Fairfield on Tuesday and will play top-ranked Fairfield Prep for the SCC/SWC D1 championship on Fridayin a 6 pm faceoff at Bennett Rink.
Wrestling — Derrick Pommills, Jr. and Connor Massey represented Notre Dame wrestling at the CIAC State Open on Feb. 23-24 at the NH Athletic Center. They both lost their first round match in the double-elimination format. Pommills won two consolation round matches before losing while Massey won one consolation round match before bowing out.
Swimming — North Hansen and Cameron Jurzyk won three events each but ND swimming fell to Shelton as the Gaels won the final four events to beat the Green Knights, 92-78, in regular season finale. Notre Dame competed in the SCC Trials, Diving, and Swim Championships on Feb. 26-28.
