With the exception of West Haven resident Andrew Marinelli competing in the decathlon competition on June 12-13, the spring sports season has come to a close at Notre Dame.
Lacrosse — The lacrosse team saw its strong postseason run come to a close in a 19-7 loss to top-seed and undefeated New Fairfield in the semifinal round of the CIAC Class M tournament on June 6at Cheshire HS. The Rebels started strong and never looked back to reach the championship game. New Fairfield led 8-0 after the first quarter and never looked back. Notre Dame, which finishes season with a 12-8 overall record, received two goals each from Nick D’Angelo, Devin Napoli, and Zach Hochman with single tallies from Justin Shanley and John Panda. New Fairfield went on to win the Class M title.
Tennis — Andrew Forchetti’s incredible and record-setting Notre Dame tennis career came to a close in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Staples’ top player Evan Felcher in the CIAC State Open semifinal round at the Yale Indoor Tennis Courts on June 5. Forchetti, who won back-to-back Class L championships as a junior and senior, the first two in school history, ends his Notre Dame career as the record holder in both regular-season wins (61) and career (88).
Track — The track team saw its season come to a close in the CIAC State Open Meet, which was held on Monday, June 4 at Willowbrook Park in New Britain. As a team, Notre Dame took home five points placing 44th overall. Nick Petruzzelli was the highest finisher in the meet as he cleared 13-6 to place sixth in pole vault. He garnered three points for the Green Knights point toal. Warren Murphy took 7th in the 400 meter dash crossing finish line in 50.0 seconds flat. That gave Notre Dame their other two points. The 4×400 relay team also qualified and placed 17th overall finishing in 3:31.70. The four runners for this race were Murphy, Daniel Range ‘19, Andrew Marinelli and Thomas Minar. In addition, Marinelli finished the 300 meter hurdles in 42.27 to place 18th.
Golf — The Notre Dame golf team ended its season on a high note finishing fifth in its second consecutive postseason round, this time at the CIAC Division II Championships held at Fairview Farms in Harwinton, CT on June 5. Robbie Ludwig and Jake Ivan-Pal both shot seven-over 79’s to lead the Green Knights, who also finished fifth at the SCC Championships on May 29at Race Brook CC. Notre Dame was seeded ninth in the 20-team field based on their season scoring average. Their team total of 323 placed them fifth behind champion Avon, Berlin, fellow SCC foe Daniel Hand, and Masuk.
