Women in West Haven looking to receive a breast cancer screening are invited to visit the Yale-New Haven Health Mobile Mammography Unit when it comes to town later this month. The unit will be at Cornell Scott Hill Health Center on July 21 and 28.
“Yale New Haven Health has always been at the forefront of healthcare. The mobile mammography unit is a prime example of this – and a critical resource for ensuring that women get screened regularly,” said Jacquelyn Crenshaw, Senior Manager, Diagnostic Radiology, Yale New Haven Health. “We take pride in providing safe, reliable and consistent service. This means we ensure the comfort of every patient while delivering results in an easily understandable manner. Our goal is to be there for our patients year after year.”
Since June 1987, the unit has been bringing Yale Radiology’s world-class breast imaging expertise to women across Connecticut. Now in its 35th year, the unit conducts more than 4,000 exams annually and is especially instrumental for providing medical exams to women in underserved communities who may experience language, transportation or work barriers.
During the pandemic, the unit continued operating, providing services safely and with social distancing. In fact, in 2020 the unit became the first in the country to be equipped with screening ultrasound in addition to 3D mammography, thanks in part to community partners like the Avangrid Foundation, the charitable giving arm of the AVANGRID family of companies. Ultrasound is important for women with dense breast tissue, who may otherwise have limited mammographic sensitivity. The partnership between Yale New Haven Health and the Avangrid Foundation that makes the ultrasound possible is now in its second year.
“The Avangrid Foundation is proud to support the essential services provided by the Yale New Haven Health Mobile Mammography Unit,” said Pablo Colón, Director, Corporate Citizenship at Avangrid and Executive Director, Avangrid Foundation. “At AVANGRID, we believe in keeping our communities safe. This was true more than ever during the height of the pandemic when our support helped to keep the unit in service. Safety is one of our many shared values with Yale New Haven Health and the reason we’re proud to partner with them to make healthcare more accessible.”
