Planning and Zoning Commissioner Steven R. Mullins proposed the adoption of a new Standard Flag for the City of West Haven during the public session at last week’s City Council meeting. Mullins said that he is hoping the flag will be considered before the city’s Centennial celebrations in the fall.
The design depicts the 13 stars of the original colonies, the Connecticut State Flag, the Union Jack honoring bravery and compassion of British Army Adjutant William Campbell, who is credited for saving the life of the Rev, Noah Webster, Pastor of the First Congregational Church during the Battle of New Haven on July 5, 1779, the old West Haven Town Hall to represent old West Haven and the West Haven City Seal in the center.
“After presenting my thoughts on the banner to graphic designer Allen Garlock of West Haven, he came up with the design.” said Mullins
The year 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Town of West Haven becoming and independent, self-governing municipality. Prior to that, West Haven was a borough of the Town of Orange.
By an act of the State Legislature, the newly incorporated town was able to elect it’s own Board of Selectmen and Representative Town Meeting members. The town evolved into the City of West Haven and began electing a mayor and a 13-member City Council.
The council took the suggestion, but there is no word on what action will be taken. Mullins is hoping to spur interest in the new design.
