Another busy week on the Green Knight Nation springs sports scene highlighted by baseball team winning three in a row to qualify for Class L tournament, tennis on the verge of making SCC post-season, lacrosse with two big wins and golf records second lowest score of season.
Baseball — The Notre Dame baseball team won three straight games last week, including a Wednesday win over Lyman Hall to qualify for the Class L state tournament. The week began with two straight solid pitching outings in 4-1 win over West Haven and 2-0 win at Lyman Hall before the bats exploded in a 11-5 win at Hamden. James Salemme stole the show against West Haven as he scattered three hits and allowed only one run while striking out five in his complete game win. Mike Sansone bettered that outing when he one-hit Lyman Hall on Wednesday for their eighth win of season. In their 11-5 win Friday at Hamden, the bats exploded for 16 hits as they improve to 9-9 on season. John Martinello and Eddie Zanor had four hits apiece in the win.
Lacrosse — The lacrosse team had a successful week, gaining a huge win over Hand on Monday, and a non-league win over New Milford on Saturday, sandwiched around a loss to 5th-ranked Fairfield Prep mid-week. Ben Hassen scored four times, three in the second half, including the go-ahead score as the Green Knights beat Hand, 11-8, on Monday. The win also qualified Coach Alessi’s team for the CIAC Class M Tournament for the 11th year in a row. After a 13-1 loss at Prep, the lacrosse team rebounded with a string two middle quarters in its comfortable win over New Milford. Zachary Hochman, Devin Napoli, and Ben Hassen combined for 11 of the 12 Green Knight goals as they beat New Milford, 12-6, at Veterans Field on May 12. Hochman led the way with five goals.
Tennis — By virtue of its two-win week, the tennis team is on the precipice of qualifying for the SCC postseason. The Green Knights fell to Guilford (5-2) on Monday before beating Hamden (6-1) and Shelton (4-3) to end the week. Andrew Forchetti and Andre Singer both swept the week winning all three matches as they added to their career win totals.
Track — ND track splits its Tuesday meet, beating Fairfield Prep, 93-57, while losing to Hand, 86-64. Nick Petruzzelli won both the pole vault and javelin. Warren Murphy won the 400-meter run while Andrew Marinelli won the 300 hurdles. Jared Russo was also an event winner capturing the triple jump. They finished the regular season dual meet record with a 7-5 mark.
Golf — The golf team had its second best round of the week when they fired a 165 in a loss to SCC favorite Xavier on May 10. Earlier in the week, they suffered a tough one-stroke loss to Fairfield Prep (171-172). The golf team fell to 3-7-1 on the season is still in good shape to qualify for the postseason in both the league and state tournaments.
