Cross-Country sweeps meet and places third at Sloper Relays while football team falls to cross-town rival West Haven in a game played at UNH’s Dellacamera Stadium.
Cross-Country — A late sprint over the final 100 yards by Notre Dame’s Tommy Minar was just the start to what turned out to be a banner day for the Green Knights cross country team. Minar edged Hamden’s Damon Swift by one second to win the race, held at Hamden’s Town Park Course. Notre Dame swept the meeting beating Hamden (23-38), North Haven (23-36), and East Haven (15-50). In a fun-filled event called the Sloper Relays on Friday, the cross-country team had a strong showing with a third-place finish out of the 43-team field. Notre Dame went with a business attire theme, running in shirts and ties in the 1.5 mile relay event. Jon Katz and Tom Minar both ran their legs in 8:06 and Anthony Bruno and Oliver Shannon were right behind as Notre Dame finished in a time of 31:52 for the six-mile relay. The cross country team ran against Hand, Fairfield Prep, and Foran this past Monday and will race in the Nonnewaug Invitational in Woodbury on Friday afternoon.
Football — West Haven made more big plays, including a pair of big runs with the game in the balance, in their 28-7 win over Notre Dame in the annual Soderman Bowl Game played at UNH’s DellaCamera Stadium. Zack Hochman pulled the Green Knights within 14-7 late in the third quarter on touchdown run. But a Jordan Berrios long run set up a Justin Medina 4-yard score and West Haven was back in control 21-7. Notre Dame returns to battle facing an undefeated 3-0 Branford team on the road on Friday.
Soccer — Shane Mufarinya tallied eight minutes into the second half to give ND soccer a 1-0 lead over undefeated Xavier on Saturday. Unfortunately, the undefeated Falcons responded with four unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes en route to their 4-1 SCC home win. Earlier in the week, the Green Knights lost on back-to-back days when they fell to Career/Hillhouse, 1-0, on a goal with under eight minutes left before losing to two-time defending state champion Hand, 3-0. Notre Dame has a two-game week playing at North Haven on Tuesday and Law on Friday.
