Mayor Dorinda Borer and Police Chief Joseph S. Perno recently announced a significant decrease in motor vehicle-related crime across the city, highlighting the success of a coordinated strategy focused on prevention, enforcement and community engagement.
Recent data shows that motor vehicle theft in West Haven dropped by 31% over the past year. Specific improvements include a decrease in stolen vehicles, stolen license plates and vehicle tampering.
Borer emphasized that car theft is more than just a property crime; it is a citywide safety issue.
“At first glance, a stolen vehicle might seem like something covered by insurance and eventually replaced,” Borer said. “But for the victim, the impact is deeply personal. It means missing work, struggling to get children to school, finding transportation replacement and feeling unsafe in your own neighborhood.
“Stolen vehicles are often used to commit additional offenses. By reducing car theft, we are preventing further criminal activity and keeping our streets safer for everyone.”
Last year, Borer and Perno announced their plan to crack down on motor vehicle crime. They attribute the success of their proactive strategy to the implementation of license plate-reading cameras, increased street patrols, and a robust public awareness campaign that encourages prompt notification for early apprehension.
To maintain momentum, Perno said the Police Department is continuing a multifaceted approach, such as increasing patrols in high-risk areas, collaborating with regional and state law enforcement partners, and targeting enforcement against repeat offenders.
“Through a combination of community awareness and strong partnerships with law enforcement, we have made a real difference,” Perno said. “Prevention starts with awareness. Small actions like locking doors and removing valuables can make a significant difference in reducing opportunities for theft.”
Borer noted that there is always more work to do, but that the information is welcome news.
“There will always be more work to do, but the improvement in this data is a reflection of our commitment last year to invest in resources, the great work of our officers, and the public rising to the occasion to help each other and report suspicious activity timely,” Borer said. “Keep it up, West Haven! Together, we are making a difference.”
