The West Haven Peewee A travel hockey team split a pair games at Edward L. Bennett Rink over the weekend. The Blue Devils pushed their win streak to four games with a dramatic, come-from-behind victory over Central A, 5-4, on Saturday night before losing 8-2 to Southeastern A on Sunday morning. The Westies are now 4-5-0 on the season.
On Saturday night, Ronnie Mastroni scored twice within 13 seconds, ending with a hat trick in the 5-4 comeback-win. Greg Galasso was clutch in goal by making several tough stops for the Blue Devils on his way to 18 saves.
Mike Page and Sean Studley scored the other goals.
On Sunday morning, the Westies had their win streak snapped by Southeastern, 8-2. Brady Price took an outlet pass from Jonathan Charbonneau and cashed in for West Haven early in the second period. Studley went five-hole late in the third period to cap the scoring. Galasso finished with 22 saves in goal for the Westies.
The West Haven Peewee AA travel hockey team hosted Nassau County Lions AA Sunday afternoon at the Edward L. Bennett Rink in a non-league game with only one game over the weekend. The Lions prevailed in the contest, 5-3.
The first period showed plenty of action, but it was not until late in the period when the Lions scored the game’s first goal. The second period was owned by the Lions as they tallied four more unanswered goals to go up 5-0.
Brody DiNuzzo and buried it in the back of the net to get West Haven within 5-1. DiNuzzo set up Billy Mascari to make it 5-2. Mascari scored late to end the night.
The West Haven Bantam A travel hockey team came away with a split of two games this weekend. The Westies opened with a 4-2 loss to Northwestern A, before rallying for a 4-3 victory over Watertown A.
In the opener of the weekend, West Haven had a pair of early leads, but could not hold on in the home loss.
Jayden Spreyer and Cam Delvecchio scored. Gabe Mongelli , Will Gianquinto, Chris Adkins, and Kyle Droney played well in the loss, as did Brendan Smith in goal.
West Haven then traveled to Shelton Sunday afternoon to play Watertown. Trailing by two goals, then again by one late in the contest, West Haven rallied for the win.
Dave Brown scored off an assist from Mickey Dowd with 2:42 left in the first. Dowd then evened the contest off an assist from Matt Stevens with 3:56 left in the second, before Watertown scored a short-handed goal with 4:04 left in the game. Brown scored an unassisted power play goal to even the contest with 2:59 left, and then set up Dowd for the winner with 24 seconds to go.
Bryan Hong was outstanding in goal, making 33 saves, including 12 in the final period. Sean Bosworth, Jason Alling, Matt Wezenski, Haygen Axelrod, and Joshua Gyolai all played well on defense, while Colin Deane was stellar offensively in the win.
The West Haven Bantam B travel hockey team returned to the ice last Friday evening in Northford against Greater New Haven A1 in a tough game which ended in a 3-3 tie.

Two days later, the Blue Devils traveled to Bridgeport to play Wonderland B1 where Austin Fruin would post another shutout in a 1-0 victory. Taylor Alfano scored the only goal of the game in the first period.
The Blue Devils traveled to Danbury against a much bigger Western B team. Yousaf Ullah’s unassisted tally in the second period would be the only goal of the contest for the Westies as they fell 2-1 to Western. Fruin made 33 saves in the game.
The Westies returned home on Sunday against Greater New Haven in a rematch from the week prior. The two teams came out strong, and played a physical game, but both goalies held shutouts going late into the third period.
With 1:23 left in the game, Johnson slid the puck past the GNH goalie for the go-ahead and eventual game winner. The Westies locked down the Warriors late in the game, including an empty net attack to try and tie the game. Fruin posted another shutout, even after a third period injury.
