The West Haven Mite B travel hockey team had two games last weekend, the first taking place at home on Saturday morning as the Westies took on the West Haven Mite C’s.
The Mite B’s looked solid throughout the game as they passed the puck well and played well as a team. Kyle D’Agostino and Ethan McGrath made some key stops defensively, while Tony Parise made some key plays in the attacking end. Evan Harrison once again played great in-between the pipes, and Connor Owens hustled up and down the ice.
Sunday morning, the Westie Mite B’s were back in action, traveling south to take on New Canaan. The Westies came away with the win, again on the back of solid team play.
Logan Minio and Jax Guarino each picked up a hat trick, with each one getting an assist from Ben Trenchard. Trenchard picked up a goal of his own, banging home a rebound through the five hole.
Ryan Schempp and Joe Mondo were both strong on defense, and Brady Salkins picked up a stellar goal on a breakaway that he slotted past the New Canaan goalie.
The West Haven Mite B travel hockey team picked up another win this weekend, as they battled the Hamden Green Dragons Sunday morning.
Parise stepped up for his team to take over net minder duties, making several huge saves to keep the Westies in the game. Salkins scored the opener for the Blue Devils, and slotted the puck home two more times to pick up the hat trick. The scoring was spread around as Minio, Guarino, Schempp and Trenchard all scored, with Trenchard slotting home a rebound off of a Minio shot late in the game.
Mondo had a strong performance, using his speed to back check and fore check throughout the game. Owens and McGrath made several key passes and D’Agostino made some big plays defensively in the win for the Blue Devils.
The West Haven Squirt B travel hockey team went 3-0-1 in the Andy Noel Columbus Day Classic to secure a spot in the division final to be played on Monday. The Westies face the Putnam Panthers, whom they fell to on Saturday despite a hard-fought battle. In spite of the loss, the Westies regrouped and posted impressive wins against Pelham and the Southern Stars.
Brendan Silva played outstanding in net in every game. Jackson Troyer dominated offensively, leading the Westies with six goals, several of which were unassisted. Troyer was followed by Josie Reed with two goals and Marchello Criscuolo with one goal.
Forwards Jocelyn Kenny, Sophia Locklear, Sydney Reed and Paul Clini all contributed offensively, with Locklear, Sydney Reed, Clini and Josie Reed all earning assists. The Westies were anchored defensively by the solid play of Ava Schoeman, Caitlin Aloi and Josie Reed.
The West Haven Peewee A team dropped an 8-3 decision to Greater New Haven A1 on Sunday morning at Edward L. Bennett Rink. The Blue Devils are now 2-3-0 on the season.
The Warriors got out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, but West Haven worked hard to get on the scoreboard. Cameren Lipford retrieved the puck behind the net and slid a pass out front where Zach Melchiore jammed it home with seven seconds left on the clock.
GNH added to their lead in the second period and led 6-1 at the second intermission. The Westies showed grit in the third period and controlled much of the play.
Lipford fed Mikey D’Aiuto for a wrist shot and Sean Studley snapped home the rebound to make it 7-2. Just over one minute later, Studley carried the puck over the blue line and sent a perfect pass to Lipford who roofed his shot to cut the deficit to 7-3.
The Warriors outshot the Westies for the game, 30-22. Kai Luca started in goal for the Westies and Cedrik Roy played the second half of the game in net. The pair combined for 22 saves.
The West Haven Bantam AA travel hockey team won a pair of games last week, defeating Darien AA and Central AA.
The Westies traveled to play Darien Saturday evening and behind a complete team effort, posted a 1-0 victory. Mickey Dowd scored off an assist from Matt Stevens with 3:42 remaining for the game’s only goal. Bryan Hong was solid in goal for the Westies to post the shutout.
West Haven hosted Central AA on Sunday and won 4-3. Dowd scored twice and Stevens added a goal and an assist in the victory.
Dowd gave West Haven a 1-0 lead with 18.3 seconds left in the first off an assist from Max Schroeder, then gave West Haven a 2-1 lead with 5:41 left in the second off assists from Stevens and Marco Goodmaster.
With the game even at two, Stevens scored on a loose puck in front with 7:07 to go, before Robert McCarthy scored off an assist from Thomas Porto 54 seconds later.
West Haven fell in a pair of contests this weekend to the Hartford Jr. Wolfpack Major team. The Westies fell 6-1 on Saturday in Cromwell and 6-2 at home on Sunday.
West Haven trailed 4-0 on Saturday, before Dowd scored off assists from Porto and Goodmaster with 9 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the game, before Hartford responded 2:20 later and added another in the final minute.
The Westies fell 6-2 Sunday afternoon at the Edward L. Bennett Rink. Hartford took a 3-0 lead in the first, before Dowd scored an unassisted goal with 1:44 left in the first. Trailing 6-1, Dowd scored with 5:57 remaining to get West Haven closer.
