Another busy week on the Green Knight Nation springs sports scene highlighted by senior track athlete Nicholas Petruzzelli clearing 15-feet on the pole vault to set the school record in their meet at Shelton on April 24.
Track — After setting the school record in the pole vault for the indoor track season this past February, Nick Petruzzelli now owns the spring outdoor track pole vault record as well. Petruzzelli cleared 15-feet in a meet at Shelton on April 24 to now have both records. You can watch a video of his record-breaking leap on the Notre Dame Athletics Twitter Feed. It’s also posted on the NDWHAthletics Instagram account. Other winners for Notre Dame included: Jason Sawicki, who won the 110 hurdles in 16.5 seconds; Warren Murphy, who won the 400-meter dash in 51.5 seconds; and Andrew Marinelli, who won the 300 hurdles in 42.2 seconds.
Lacrosse — The lacrosse team had a solid 2-1 week by routing East Lyme 19-6 and beating Waterford 9-6 while falling to Hall 7-6 midweek. Senior Cam Ellis was one of the leaders in the two wins as he had four goals in each of the two wins. In the loss to Hall, the Green Knights had four quality shots in the final three minutes but couldn’t get the equalizer. Notre Dame stands an even 5-5 after 10 games.
Tennis — Notre Dame tennis beat career on Monday to run its record to 7-0 before losing its first match of the year when they fell, 5-2 ,to Guilford on Saturday. Senior Andrew Forchetti at first singles and sophomore Oliver Shannon at fourth singles won both of their matches.
Baseball — The Notre Dame nine dipped below .500 with a pair of losses to see its record stumble to 5-6 through 11 games. In an eventual 7-4 loss on Monday to Amity, Notre Dame rallied from a 4-4 deficit with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to tie the game. However, a Spartan bases clearing triple proved to be the difference. One bad inning doomed the Green Knights against Xavier as the Falcons turned a 2-1 lead into an 11-1 lead with a nine-run fifth inning in its eventual win by that same score.
Golf — Notre Dame dipped to 2-4 on the season with a pair of losses to Amity at Oak Lane CC and Fairfield Prep at the CC of Fairfield. The Green Knight golfers have been road warriors with five of their first six matches away from Race Brook CC. Junior Tommy Rosati led ND against Amity with a 43 while senior Robbie Ludwig paved the way against Fairfield Prep with a three-over 39.
