Connor Raines paved way for three basketball wins, hockey got shutout from Nick Piselli in win at Xavier, Nick Petruzzelli tied school record in pole vault, swimming fell in lone meet of week and wrestling fared well in weekend invitational.
Basketball — Connor Raines was leading scorer in all three games as ND basketball beat Amity (78-77), Shelton (74-53) and West Haven (66-53) to sweep the week. With the three wins, ND improved record to 7-3 as season reached halfway point. Michael Brooks and Alec Kinder had big weeks. Kinder had 11 points and 11 rebounds against Shelton and was one rebound shy of second straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds against West Haven.
Hockey — Coach Belcher’s crew split their two games last week, falling 6-2 to Springfield’s Pope Francis on Thursday before beating Xavier 1-0 on Saturday night. Nick Piselli made 26 saves to record the shutout in his first varsity start for the Green Knights between the pipes. Chris Hibson’s power-play goal late in second period was game-winner against Xavier. Kyle Stober and Mike Card scored in loss at Pope Francis.
Swimming — After a lengthy break between meets due to the Christmas recess, the Green Knights returned to the pool and fell in a close meet to Xavier 100-83 on January 10. North Hansen, Cameron Jurzyk , and David Albright led Notre Dame. Hansen took home a pair of first-place finishes touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.83. He also won the 100 butterfly in 55.19. Jurzyk won the 50 free in 23.91 while Albright captured the diving portion of the meet.
Track — Nick Petruzzelli tied the school record clearing 13-6 in the pole vault to lead a solid day of competition for the Notre Dame winter track team at the SCC Coaches Invitational on Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center. Petruzzelli, who tied the mark of Joe Sikorsky finished second in the event to Southington’s Zachary Burleigh. Warren Murphy was the only other Green Knight to place in the top six with his 37.68 run in the 300-meter dash.
Wrestling — Chalk it up as another successful invitation for Coach Belanger and the 2017-18 wrestling team at the Colton Abely Invitation held at Mercy HS in Middletown on Saturday. Four wrestlers – Christian Fillion, Connor Massey, Derrick Pommills, Jr., and Alex Barbour all advanced to the final stages of their respective brackets in their weight class. Fillion, Massey, and Pommills all finished second while Barbour took home fourth.
