On April 22, members of the Sandy Point Neighborhood Association were joining the Stewards of the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary and volunteers from United Illuminating for the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary Beach and Marsh Earth Day Cleanup. The event corresponded with Earth Day.
“As we celebrate Earth Day in Connecticut, we’re proud to partner with the Sandy Point Neighborhood Association to give back and make sure we’re caring for the unique natural resources and habitats in communities like West Haven,” said United Illuminating President and CEO Frank Reynolds. “More than 15 UI employees are taking part in this terrific opportunity to volunteer, leveraging an additional financial donation from the Avangrid Foundation.”
Second District Councilman Meli Garthwait, a Steward of the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary, was instrumental in bringing UI’s employee volunteers to the event.
“I am so grateful to United Illuminating for partnering with us to help clean up our shoreline and marshes in celebration of Earth Day. Every year since I have moved here, Sandy Point has attracted more attention from residents around the state and beyond for its natural beauty in an urban setting. I am honored to be one its stewards as we continue to work with the community to maintain and enhance Sandy Point and the rest of our shoreline as well. See you Saturday!”
The cleanup concentrated on sections of the beach and waterfront areas clearing trash, plastic bottles and other items that wash up from New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound.
Meanwhile, The SPNA participated in The Great Give, sponsored by the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, from April 28 to May 4. Since The Great Give began in 2010, more than $20 million has been raised for hundreds of nonprofits.
Moving forward as a nonprofit organization, the SPNA will support activities primarily with charitable contributions. Membership fees will no longer fund programs.
Since 2021, SPNA has promoted the Sandy Point neighborhood and has helped to build a sense of community. Association programs include frequent cleanups in visible areas, providing constructive input on City projects, advocating for neighborhood improvement projects, holding social gatherings, and promoting pedestrian safety on public streets.
