The Sandy Point Neighborhood Association has announced its first Beach Cleanup for Saturday, April 9 from 10 AM to noon (RAIN DATE: April 10) at the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary.
Organized by the association’s Beautification Committee, the cleanup will begin at the Sandy Point Bird Sanctuary Parking Lot, on Beach Street across fromThird Avenue Extension. The focus of th cleanup will be the beach and marsh areas within the Bird Sanctuary and the parking lot area.
This cleanup is especially important since sections of the beach will soon be fenced in to protect nesting shore birds later in the month and will prevent full access to portions of the beach through late August. City and neighborhood residents are encouraged to join in the effort.
The Association will provide gloves and trash bags for volunteers, and there will be a limited number of trash grabbers/pickers available for those who need one. Bottled water and snacks will be provided for all participants.
“The Bird Sanctuary is a focal point for our neighborhood, and this spring cleanup is an important part of protecting the ecology of this unique environmental area. We are hopeful we can all make a difference together,” commented association Vice-President Kathie Hebert.
The Association has scheduled a total of ten (10) cleanups throughout the year, targeting different sections of the Sandy Point neighborhood each time. The complete schedule can be viewed on the Association’s website, www.SandyPointNeighbors.Org.
Other cleanups will be scheduled at the Sanctuary as well.
The association was initially formed in 2021 to build networks of volunteers to improve communications and the quality of life in this neighborhood, located in the southeastern corner of this city.
The association’s boundaries are Washington Avenue on the west; First Avenue on the east; Beach Street on the south; and Brown Street on the north.
Interested residents, property owners and businesses are welcome to join by visiting the Association’s website, www.SandyPointNeighbors.Org.
