Led by Boy Scout Aadi Neujahr, members of Troop 899, along with about twenty other volunteers built a new walking trail at the West River Memorial Park on Marginal Drive in Allingtown this past Saturday. The trail goes from the closed road gate at Westfield Street down to the West River.
Neujahr, 15, who also lives in the neighborhood has been working with the West River Watershed Coalition and many volunteers to clean up the site for the trail. The compost mulch for the trail was provided by the City of New Haven Parks Department. “The goal is to get the mulch all the way down to the West River.” Neujahr said. He said that he has been working with organizations to obtain grants to build a dock for fishing at the trail’s end.
The group of volunteers that included parents, teachers and Scout Troop 633 from Branford also built two picnic tables for the site to welcome citizens to enjoy the open space.
Neujahr has been in Boy Scout for 10 years. He is organizing this neighborhood project to earn his Eagle Scout degree.
Boy Scout Troop 899 meets at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit.
