After opening the season with four consecutive victories, the Savin Rock Seadogs 14U travel baseball team fell for the first time with a 6-3 loss against Run and Gun baseball. The Seadogs were held to just one hit in the game off the bat of Cam Cruz.
Ray Gilbert took the loss on the hill, allowing four runs, three earned, in two innings of work. Evan Jones pitched the final four innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out four and walking two.
Run and Gun scored four times in the second and once more in the third for a 5-0 lead. Savin Rock got a run back in the fourth when Ryan Robinson led off with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 6-1, the Seadogs inched closer in the sixth as Anthony Constantinople reached on an error, Michael Madera walked with one out, and Gilbert reached on an error to score Constantinople. After Madera stole third, Jesse Buonocore lined to left, scoring Madera with the sacrifice fly.
The Seadogs moved to 5-2 with a doubleheader split against the Shoreline Breakers. Savin Rock won the first game 7-0, before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.
In the opener, Robinson tossed a complete game five-hitter, walking one and striking out one. Gilbert led the way with three hits and two runs batted in, while Buonocore had two hits and drove in a pair, Haygen Axelrod had two hits, and Madera scored twice.
The Seadogs took a 1-0 lead in the third as Madera walked with one out, moved to second on a single by Constantinople, and stole third. With the bases loaded, Cam Cruz walked to force in Madera for a 1-0 lead.
Savin Rock increased the lead to 2-0 in the fourth as Gilbert led off with a single and scored on a Buonocore’s double to left.
The Seadogs put the game away with five runs in the fifth. Madera and Constantinople led off with walks, and with two outs Madera scored on a wild pitch. After Cruz and Jones walked to load the bases, Gilbert singled to right to score Constantinople and Cruz for a 5-0 lead. Jones scored on a wild pitch, and Buonocore singled to center to score Fabrizio Nunez for a 7-0 advantage.
Two Savin Rock pitchers combined on a two-hitter in the nightcap, but Savin Rock was held to just four hits in the shutout loss. The Breakers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth and rallied for two more runs in the seventh.
Buonocore went six plus innings, allowing three runs on one hit, striking out four and walking four. Jones allowed just one hit in the final inning and struck out three. Jones, Gilbert, Buonocore and Axelrod picked up the lone Savin Rock hits in the game.
The Seadogs improved to 6-2 with a 6-3 victory over Madison Monday evening. Jones pitched a complete game five-hitter, striking out five and walking one. He did not allow an earned run.
Gilbert led the offense with two hits, and Buonocore had one hit, drove in two runs, and scored twice.
The Seadogs took a 3-0 lead in the second as Buonocore reached on an error, Axelrod walked, and Josh Trager and Robinson followed with one-out walks for a 1-0 advantage. Axelrod scored on a ground out by Constantinople, and Trager scored on a wild pitch.
Leading 3-1, the Seadogs scored three more runs in the third. Cruz led off with a walk, Gilbert hit a one-out single, and both scored on a Buonocore’s double to left. Buonocore scored on a wild pitch for a 6-1 lead.
Savin Rock fell to 6-3 with an 8-2 loss to the Connecticut Edge in North Branford. Gilbert led the offense with three hits and Chase Supan had a pair of hits. Cruz pitched five innings of solid relief, allowing two earned runs, while striking out three and walking three.
The Edge took a 5-0 lead in the first inning on four hits and three walks, before Savin Rock scored single runs in the second and third innings.
The Seadogs got within 6-1 in the second when Jones walked with the bases loaded to force in Constantinople. Savin Rock got within 6-2 in the third as Gilbert led off with an infield single, Trager reached on a one-out error to put runners on the corners, and Cruz grounded to third to score Gilbert.
Savin Rock saw its losing streak reach three games with a doubleheader loss against the Connecticut Rage Saturday afternoon. With the sweep, the Seadogs fell to 6-5.
Leading 5-3 in the seventh of the opener, Savin Rock watched as the Rage scored five times in the final inning to post the win. Cruz, Axelrod, Gilbert, Madera, Buonocore, Nunez, Robinson and Jones all had hits in the loss.
Buonocore had the big blow in the opener as his long 3-run homer to left in the first inning scored Axelrod and Gilbert, gave the Seadogs a 4-0 lead.
Leading 4-2, the Seadogs increased the margin to three runs in the third when Robinson singled to score Gilbert.
The Rage ensured the sweep, scoring three times in each of the third and fifth innings of an 8-0 victory over Savin Rock. The Seadogs were held to just singles by Axelrod and Cruz in the loss.
