West Haven, Connecticut native Gianni Gambardella enters his senior season at the University of Maine as one of the Black Bears’ most experienced hurlers and a hopeful prospect in the upcoming 2026 Major League Baseball Draft.
Standing at a towering 6-foot-2, Gambardella has developed into a key contributor for the Black Bears’ pitching staff.
Graduating as part of the 2022 Class at West Haven High School, Gambardella was already committed to UMaine after what was a thrilling two-way senior season that included a .473 batting average and 63 strikeouts with a 1.43 ERA. If those stats weren’t already impressive enough, Gambardella didn’t strike out once at the plate and had an OBP of .565 for West Haven.
Gambardella’s first season with UMaine saw him excel and earn national recognition and conference honors. He was named Freshman All-American and selected to the America East All-Conference First Team. Gambardella would also go on to win a tournament MVP with eight scoreless innings in the title game, helping Maine win its first conference championship since 2011 and reach an NCAA Regional.
Fast forward to Gambardella’s junior year with Maine, and he has become a multi-use pitcher, being used as a long reliever and starter. Appearing in 15 games for the Black Bears in 2025, Gambardella notched 10 starts, pitching 62.2 innings and having the tune of a 4.88 ERA with 51 K’s. That performance had him earn America East All-Conference for the third year straight in a season marked with a career-high number of games played in (15) for what was seen as a step forward after a rocky 2024 campaign.
The Westie entered his name in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft following his junior season. Gianni’s combined ability to generate called third strikes and induce soft contact had him viewed as a mid-to-late round pick if chosen. Gambardella ultimately never got that call and now eyes 2026.
It is important to note that Gambardella played in the prestigious Cape Cod League for the Harwich Mariners. The Cape Cod League is considered to hold some of the nation’s top collegiate position players and pitchers. Gambardella recorded 24.2 innings on the mound for the Mariners and pitched to a sub 3.00 ERA of 2.55, and a 2-1 record across 6 games (4 starts).
Currently 21-years-old, Gambardella will be 22 come draft day.
Historically, Major League Baseball teams do not draft a high number of college seniors and instead sign them post-draft as UDFA’s for a higher leverage, lower-contract cost. Nonetheless, in 2026, Gambardella returns as a senior with Maine as a veteran leader to provide stability.
Beyond all the stat lines and numbers, Gambardella’s journey from West Haven to Orono encapsulates the growth of adaptation along with grinding out a collegiate career with the best. Gambardella was the first West Haven High School pitcher since Tommy Lawrence attended UMaine, as Lawrence himself had an eight-year career after being a UDFA after college. Lawrence himself played in the Tampa Bay Ray’s farm system and for various Independent and Foreign teams.
The draft is not out of question for Gambardella, but with that a question raises: For what team will we see the former Blue Devil play for in 2027? Gianni has the talent and with a solid stat line comprising a sub 3.00 ERA and WHIP below 1.050, we may very well see another Westie play professional baseball.
UMaine began their season on Feb. 13, against Duke for what was a four-game series. Maine is now gearing up to face High Point University for what will be another four-game series starting on Friday.
