The West Haven Squirt A travel hockey team dropped its only game of the weekend, losing 5-2 to Avon A, at Edward L. Bennett Rink on Saturday morning.
The Westies are now 32-13-3 overall.
Thomas Porto got the Blue Devils going in the opening period when he sliced through the Avon defense and wristed the puck home for a 1-0 lead 3:36 into the contest. Avon scored the next five goals of the game and had a 5-1 lead early in the third period.
Sean Studley’s slick redirection of Dylan Link’s shot from the right point made the score 5-2 with two minutes left in the game. Jacob Silva had 22 saves in net for the Westies.
The West Haven Peewee A travel hockey team fell to 29-18-5 after losing a pair of games this weekend. The Westies opened the week with a 4-1 loss against New Canaan, and closed the weekend with a 6-2 loss against Wallingford.
Trailing 2-0 Saturday afternoon against New Canaan in Darien, the Westies got within 2-1 in the second period when Shane Repetto’s shot was stopped, but Jayden Spreyer knocked in the rebound. West Haven never got closer as New Canaan scored twice in the final period to win by three.
The Westies played host to Wallingford on Sunday, and again got within a goal twice, before falling at the Edward L. Bennett Rink. Spreyer and Madera led the offense with two assists apiece.
Trailing 2-0 after one period, West Haven inched closer when Spreyer fed Michael Madera in front. Madera spun and fed an open Colin Deane just 32 seconds into the middle period to cut the deficit in half.
Wallingford scored three power play goals in the game and took a 3-1 lead with a power play goal with 3:53 remaining in the second.
The Westies again got within a goal when Madera fed Jack Sellman at the point, and the defenseman’s shot found the back of the net with two minutes left in the second. Spreyer, who dug the puck out of the corner, also picked up an assist on Sellman’s goal.
Wallingford put the game away with three goals in the third, two coming in a span of 1:47to give the guests a 5-2 lead.
