The West Haven Squirt AA ventured last weekend to Exeter, NH to compete in the Tier 2 New England Regionals. Their quest to take home the title fell one game short as they fell to Winchester, MA, 4-3, in the title game.
The Westies jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the final behind goals from Wade Roach and Charlie Gunning. Cody Young and Jeremiah McGrath picked up assists on their goals. Dylan Spreyer took a pass from Gunning and buried an equalizer to even the score at 3. Winchester buried a late goal to take home the title. Nick Ciccosanti and Colby Cushing had great scoring chances for the Westies. Gabe Calabrese saved 21 shots in net.
The Westies got the final by avenging their two in-state losses on the year as they down New Canaan AA 4-1 in the semi-final. After falling behind by a goal, Spreyer broke free and scored one to tie the game. Gunning buried the next two goals and Colby Cushing tucked in a wrap around to put the game away. The Westie assists on the day were from Alex Jenei, Dane Walsh and Cushing. Calabrese was again stellar in net for the win.
In cross over action, the Westies opened with an 8-1 win over the Maine Gladiators. Gunning finished with 5 goals on the day, Roach 2 and Cushing the final one. Assists came from AJ Farrell, Young, Ciccosanti, Jenei and Cushing. Michael Paone and Calabrese shared duties in net accounting for 16 saves.
The Westies downed the Cyclones Squirt Platinum 4-1 behind a pair of Gunning goals and goals by Spreyer and Roach. Ciccosanti accounted for the assist on the day. Calabrese got the win in net
The Westies fell to Winchester 7-4 in the final crossover game. Peyton Berelepsch, Cushing, Gunning and Spreyer found the back of the net. Assists on the day came from Henry Strada, Daniel Moll, Young, Farrell and McGrath.
