At a young age Ryan Carew, son of Rich and Kathy Carew (Mulkerin School of Irish Dance), joined Team West Haven’s Special Olympics program, first on the track team and then moved on to swimming. Ryan was always there keeping people happy and making them smile, including his two big sisters Amy and Maggie. He loved playing with Legos and yellow was his favorite color. He also loved fire trucks, as many of his family are firefighters. Ryan forever enjoyed spending time with others and sharing stories and jokes over a cup of tea.
As part of Team West Haven he enjoyed all the practices and state competitions, which including staying away from home in the dorms with his team family. His favorite event was getting together with his family and team members after collecting donations and taking a stroll down the boardwalk in costume to help support his Special Olympics family.
On June 5, 2000 when Ryan was just 13, he passed away from ongoing complications his body could not handle. His memory has lived on. He saved many lives through organ donation and his spirit of life. In October 2000 Ryan’s Walk was created.
Each year since those from Team West Haven, Inc along with the Carew family and friends gather together for a leisurely walk in Ryan’s memory to help raise funds to help cover costs for practices, competitions and uniforms.
