The recent fatal fire at Malcolm Road has prompted City of West Haven Fire Department-Allingtown Chief Michael Terenzio to remind city residents precautions taken by homeowners can help prevent or curtail the risks of fire.
In a follow up to the fire, Terenzio said residents should contrate their actions on three matters:
~~ Working Smoke Detectors: Ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries regularly.
~~ Detector Assistance: West Haven residents who have difficulty purchasing or installing smoke detectors can contact their local fire department for assistance.
~~ Supplemental Heating Safety: As seasonal temperatures begin to fall heading into the winter months, residents are urged to ensure all supplemental heating appliances (such as space heaters, wood stoves, and fireplaces) are properly installed, inspected, and operated according to manufacturer guidelines.
Residents with questions or concerns regarding heating appliance safety, smoke detectors, or general home safety are encouraged to contact their local Fire Marshal’s Office, he offered.
