Last year’s WestFest brought thousands of residents to the Green along with hundreds of University of New Haven students. The combined effort between the city, the university and the UNH Mayor’s Advisory Commission hopes to solidify town-gown relations.

Getting the run in
Morning joggers around Sea Bluff looking toward Bradley Point get their early morning workout in before it gets too hot. The area got a respite from the heat late last week, but hot, humid weather returned with a vengeance, prompting schools to close early. Days are getting shorter, and early joggers are seeting dark skies when starting their runs. Fall comes to the area in three weeks.
Scholarship winner
Members of the late Susan Ruickoldt’s family, Doug “the Rake” Ruickoldt, left, and his son Douglas J. Ruickoldt, present a $2,000 check on behalf of the West Haven Breast Cancer Awareness Program to Susan A. Ruickoldt Scholarship Fund recipient Amanda Carr on Tuesday at City Hall. The fund was founded 16 years ago in memory of Ruickoldt, a city schoolteacher who died of breast cancer in 1997, and a check is awarded to a female high school senior from West Haven who plans to continue her education. Carr, a 2018 graduate of West Haven High School, will attend Springfield College in Massachusetts this fall.

West Haven High School’s fall sports teams are in the midst of pre-season workouts and scrimmages in preparation for season openers in the next two weeks. The girls soccer team had a scrimmage against arch-rival Hamden at Ken Strong Stadium Monday night, working on passing and other skills in the heat of competition.
