New book traces ballpark evolution
The original Polo Grounds was in a more central part of Manhattan before city officials, unhappy with postseason tickets, put a street through the site. It then moved to Coogan’s Bluff, where it became an iconic bathtub shape before demolition in 1964. This photo shows the Giants in the original ballpark circa 1890. Ebbets Field was built in 1912 and was expanded over the years to the look it had in the 1950s. All these and more are part of the new book, “Ballpark,” by Paul Goldberger.
