The usual crowd of nearly 100,000 was expected for Tuesday night’s Third of July fireworks display at Bradley Point. The yearly event is one of the highlights of the summer season as the city celebrates the nation’s birthday.
Longstanding tradition
The Rev. Kevin M. Dillon, pastor at Our Lady of Victory, and Bob Guthrie, carnival co-chairman, present Sue Walker from the West Haven Fireworks Committee with a check from funds donated by the parishioners. The donation to the fireworks continues the yearly tradition of supporting the fireworks.
Garden group
Clients and staff from West Haven Community House’s Community Connections’ program enjoy working in their garden and come up with new ideas each spring. They designed and purchased the materials they needed to plant spices, vegetables, fruits and flowers in the raised garden beds.

Rossi calls on DOT to maintain station
Mayor Nancy R. Rossi, with acting Public Works Commissioner Lou Esposito, right, points out an area of concern while discussing the landscaping and property maintenance of the West Haven train station with Assistant Rail Administrator Richard T. Jankovich and Transportation Rail Officer Marlene Cordero of the state Department of Transportation on June 13 at 20 Railroad Ave. Rossi and Esposito met with the officials, along with Transportation Supervising Rail Officer Craig M. Bordiere, to resolve widespread concerns of overgrown grass and plantings around the $130 million Metro-North Railroad commuter station, which is owned by the DOT.

Students at Bailey Middle School were treated to a talkback session with actress Skylar Dunn from The Greatest Showman. Dunn, who portrays young Charity in the film, appeared on stage with her voice teacher, Paul Scanlon, in front of an excited crowd of 200 chorus and drama club students. The event included an interview with Skylar Dunn, and a question portion where Bailey students asked her many questions about a career in the arts. Shown are: Scanlon, Dunn and teacher Caitlin Pinto.
