Apraxia awareness day
Forest Elementary School kindergartner Nicholas Gorske receives a proclamation from Mayor Nancy R. Rossi declaring Apraxia Awareness Day in West Haven on May 14 as Principal Thomas J. Hunt looks on. Nicholas has childhood apraxia of speech, or CAS, an uncommon speech disorder in which a child has difficulty making accurate movements when speaking. He was joined at the morning presentation by his mother, Anna Gorske, his brother and cousin, Issac Gorske and Laura Hines, and his paraprofessional, Cynthia Russello.

Senior project
University of New Haven engineering students Paul Leggett and Staphin Codio present their senior project, a tide gate replacement design for the Cove River, on May 2 at UNH. The city has partnered with UNH, providing students with relevant developmental experiences and the city with data and analysis it would otherwise have to contract for. UNH students have additionally provided sidewalk assessments for several districts and recently completed technical field work with stormwater outfalls for the city’s MS4 permit, valued at close to $10,000.

Athlete of the year
WHHS senior Patrick Lawrence was recently named the CIAC Athlete of the Year for Unified Sports. Lawrence was captain of the soccer, basketball and track teams. Standing to the right is Coach John Dolan and to the left is Bill McDermott.
West Haven girls lacrosse player Mackenzie Holy is the Vio’s Sports Plus/Westie Blue Player of the Week. In three games last week, Holy scored four goals and added an assist. Read more on the Player of the Week page at www.westieblue.com
West Haven softball player Ivy Santos is the Vio’s Sports Plus/Westie Blue Player of the Week for May 17. In two games last week, Santos threw two complete games, allowing two earned runs, while walking just three and striking out 14. Nick Flammia lets one loose vs Platt Tech in the penultimate game of the year. The Blue Devils took the game, 4-2, but ended the season Monday with a loss to Hand, 14-3. Click title for story.
