The two major parties have new leadership.
The West Haven Democratic Town Committee unanimously selected Kristen Malloy-Scanlon to lead the party for a two-year term at its organizational meeting on March 31, 2026. Malloy-Scanlon, a longtime West Haven resident, public school educator, and active member of the Democratic Town Committee, steps into the role with a focus on strengthening community engagement, supporting Democratic candidates, and fostering collaboration and unity across the city.
Mayor Dorinda Borer nominated Scanlon for the chairmanship citing, “her proven track record for bringing people together, organizing effectively and delivering results.” I have seen first-hand Kristen’s strong work ethic and collaborative approach and know she will undoubtedly lead the party with that same strength and fortitude.”
Mayor Dorinda Borer also stated, “A big thank you to Mike Last for his steady leadership, tireless commitment and the integrity he brought to every decision along the way. I’m very grateful for his partnership for myself and our team throughout this journey.”
Former chairman Michael Last seconded the nomination for Scanlon and expressed his appreciation to the town committee for their confidence and support during his four terms leading the Democratic Party in West Haven. “I think Kristen is the perfect choice for chair of the town committee. She and her team will bring new ideas and energy, leading the party to future success. Last concluded. The future of our party is in good hands.”
The 70-member town committee is composed of seven members from each of the city’s ten districts. There was no opposition to this year’s Democratic Town Committee slate of candidates and therefore, no primary.
Malloy-Scanlon said, “I am deeply honored and grateful for this opportunity. I am also excited to see what lies ahead for West Haven. Together, we will continue to build a strong, more inclusive, energized, and effective Democratic community.”
The committee also elected Jeffrey Moreno and Michael Last to serve as Vice Chairs, Cebi Waterfield as Secretary, Rosie Russo as Corresponding Secretary, Sherri Lepper as Treasurer, Chris Vargo, Jr. as Social Media Coordinator, and Michelle Mays and Mary Malenda as co-chairs for Event Planning.
The Town Committee members set and execute the local party’s policy and will be busy this spring, serving as delegates at conventions to endorse candidates for state, regional, and local races, including Governor, US Congress, State Senator, and State House Representatives.
“As we move forward, unity will still be the key. When we stand together and focus on our common goals, we are best equipped to serve our party and community”, concluded Malloy-Scanlon.
Meanwhile, the West Haven Republican Town Committee (WHRTC) announced the results of its officer elections on March 11, and replaced the longtime chairman, David Riccio.
The newly elected officers are: Chairman, Jeff Christman; Vice Chairman, Kris Petrucci; Treasurer, Angela Driver; and Secretary, Bonnie Posick.
“We are energized and ready to continue building a strong Republican presence in West Haven,” said Christman, following his election. “The Republican Town Committee is dedicated to engaging voters, supporting qualified candidates, and promoting policies that strengthen our city.”
The WHRTC extended its gratitude to Riccio for his service and dedication.
“His years of leadership helped lay a strong foundation for continued growth and civic engagement within the local Republican community,” an announcement said.
The committee also thanked the other officers, who remain at their positions, with the only change at chairman.
“They were re-elected to their respective positions, providing valuable support and stability as the WHRTC moves forward with efforts to strengthen local engagement, support candidates, and advance its goals for the upcoming election cycle,” the announcement stated.
The committee is inviting West Haven residents interested in getting involved, volunteering, or learning more about local Republican initiatives to attend upcoming meetings or to reach out directly.
