The Elite Soccer Camps Lightning U-12 girls travel team opened up West Haven Youth Soccer League play last weekend, traveling to Milford on Friday night and winning a thrilling game, 3-2. The Lightning went up in the first half behind an Jaylyn Powell goal, but Milford soon equalized from a shot by Isabella Eyler that slipped past Etta Funke.
The two teams battled back and forth, as Sophie Mazuroski played well on defense and Jaelyn Beauvais, Ashlynn Trenchard and Molly Gunning worked the midfield. In the second half, Aylin Soto set up Alexandria Nunes for a great goal, but the Lightning let Eyler get on the board again and tie the game late. It looked like the game would end in the draw before Llyanna Griffith-Waite won the ball, and played a long pass to Nunes, who calmly collected it and rocketed a shot past the Milford goalie to give the Lightning the win.
The Oyster River Energy U-10 girls were also in action on Friday night, going to Naugatuck and getting a 5-1 win. Valentina DeMartino and Madison Gargiulo played tough in goal. Mariela Cappetta and Lia Powers started in the midfield and did well moving the ball down the field. Goals were scored by Isabella Antonucci, Camilla Murphy, and Kaylee Pellino.
The West Haven U-11 boys split a pair of games this weekend. The Blue Devils defeated Meriden, 6-1, on Saturday before losing on Sunday to Wallingford, 1-0. At Kronenberger Park in Meriden on Saturday afternoon Sean Studley took Mehmet Aciker’s pass and deposited it in the net for a 1-0 lead. After Meriden tied it, Studley scored with a left-footed volley to give West Haven a 2-1 lead at halftime. Rafi Treat made back-to-back point-blank saves in goal. In the second half the Blue Devils dominated play. Pedro Furtado drilled a free kick through the Meriden wall.
Furtado made it 4-1 when he took Jeff Walker’s sweet pass and hammered it home. Pacey Larka slammed in Nate Charron’s bouncing throw in. Aciker capped the scoring when he flicked in Leo Mazuroski’s feed. Maicon Miguel played solid in goal in the second half. On Sunday the Westies played quality soccer but could not find the back of the net and fell 1-0 to a good Wallingford team. Miguel played well at left back. Matt Panton controlled play in the middle of the field. Lucas Iversen played hard in the midfield as well. Treat played the full game in goal and made several key saves.
The West Haven U-9 girls lost a tough game to Wallingford on Saturday, 3-1. Lynnie Cheson had a strong game at midfield scoring a goal and then played well in goal. Sophia Locklear played excellent defense, while Hailey Dargon, Sophia Empric and Lulu Sebas held down the midfield. Olivia Reilly showed good footskills at forward.
The Elite Soccer Camps U-14 girls went to Shelton Sunday morning, tying, 0-0. The Westies dominated play from early on, but could not find the back of the net. Cassie Wadeka mades saves when she was called upon. Julia Tsakonas and Brooke Flaherty challenged the goalie, but were unlucky not to score. The Westies’ best chance came when Ariana Izzo broke through the defense and dribbled past the goalie before she was taken out, but the referee failed to award the penalty kick. Lola DiNuzzo played well in the midfield, and Ava Murphy dominated play, controlling the ball and setting up chances for the Westies.
On Saturday, the Keenan Funeral Home Yellow Jackets took on Cappetta’s Italian Imports. The Yellow Jackets were strong in the goal with three saves by Alivia Reilly and five saves by Kaylee Pellino. Ava Pellino scored a nice goal as striker in the first half with an assist given by Lexi Lucas. Madison Gargiulo and Lucas both scored two goals to end the game with a 5-0 win. On Sunday the Yellow Jackets were back in action, playing a make-up game against Gunning Law Firm Grey Wolves. The Jackets continued their winning ways with a 2-1 win. The Yellow Jackets got two late goals by Kayci Gayle and Camilla Murphy. The Grey Wolves, with no subs available, got a goal from Nylah Arthur, her first of the season. Lulu Sebas, Kylie Gibbons, Arianna Throm, Hailey Dargon and Sophia Empric all played well.
Shoreline Wellness Center Green Leafs played a tough game against the Grey Wolves, ultimately losing, 7-5. Vrinda Patel and Nylah Beyah scored twice apiece, and Isabella Antonucci scored got one. Valentina DeMartino played hard in the goal. For the Grey Wolves, Lynnie Chesson, Kylie Gibbons, Arianna Throm and Sophia Empric had multiple goals. Lulu Sebas was strong in goal, while Kiera-Kellie Rolfe played a strong game at midfield. Hailey Dargon made excellent passes to set up scoring opportunities. In Sunday’s game, the Green leafs played Capetta’s losing, 2-1. Nylah Beyah scored for the Green Leafs. Lia Powers played hard on offense. Lila Poincelot played very strong in midfield.
The Elite Soccer Camps Blue Sharks were in action twice this weekend. On Saturday, the Sharks battled a tough West Haven Police Local 895. Ben Trenchard, Matteo D’Elia, Seth Empiric and Ryan Abekah all scored, while Jax Guarino showed some great defending. Luca Decresenzo put in a solid game with a lot of hustle.
On Sunday, the Sharks beat the West Haven Professional Firefighters, 10-5. Matteo D’Elia opened the scoring for the Sharks, getting the assist from Ben Trenchard on a nice set piece corner kick play. Trenchard and D’Elia would combine a few more times to both score and get assists. Jax Guarino made some great passes and Seth Empiric dribbled through his opponents and found the back of the net. Alex Knuth did well defensively, breaking up counter attacks, and Andrew Hulse scored a goal and dribbled well through the opponents.
West Shore Family Dental and P & B Express played a thriller, ending in a 2-2 tie. Dental’s goalie Adrian Stewart made several big saves and the attack was led by Haridas Chowdhury, who scored both goals. Bar Code was out-matched by the George Ellis Company, losing 4-1. Despite the loss, Bar Code midfielders played hard to get Bryan Monge a goal, with the assist by Alex Sanchez. Some nice saves were made by goalie Victor Davila for Bar Code.
The Top Hat Dance Academy Shamrocks and the Italian-American Civic Assn. played a great game Saturday, playing to a 2-2 draw. Jazleen Urbaez and Sihaya Robinson netted their first goals of the season for the.
On Sunday, led by Kendall Gilchrist and Chelsea Frost on defense and Ariel Titus on offense, the Shamrocks defeated the West Haven Federation of Teachers Local 1542 Mini Blueberries, 5-1. Halfway through the first half the Mini Blueberries tried to make a comeback and Anessa Worrell scored a goal. Karine Davila made some good plays, blocking Shamrock passes. Anne Charles made a couple of recoveries for the Blueberries.
The Milano & Wanat White Tornados defeated the Stars Ice Cream Blues, 2-1. The goals were scored by Marcos Tepetl and Guillermo Gonzaga. Dylan Soc and Aidan Panton played good defense. On Sunday the White Tornados played Frank Agvent Plumbing & Heating and lost, 3-1. Cadian Jones-Gaywood, Aidan Panton, Gabriel Castillo, Marcos Tepetl, Darwin Torres, Dylan Soc and Jose Rangel played well. Aidan Panton scored the Blues’ lone goal off a penalty kick.
The Rock House School of Music Blue Bruisers played Stars Ice Cream, losing, 5-0. Kameo Morrison made her touches count getting her team the ball. Ava Dasilva kept the pressure on and stuck with the opposing team. The Mini Blueberries played the Cappetta’s Italian Imports Polar Bears, losing, 7-3. Jasine Mills scored the first goal of the game with a great assist from Karine Davila who used her body to gain possession of the ball. Harper Gold, Isabella Cooper Aaliyah Powers all played well.. Josylyn Davila scored her first goal. Anne Charles used her footskills to pass the ball to her team. Anessa Worrell took multiple shots on goal and made one in the net.
The Polar Bears took to the field again, playing an impressive game against the Italian American Civic Association Sunday with a 9-6 win. Evangeline Rathbun was strong in defense protecting the goal. Kai Routolo, Luciana Cappetta, Kiley McCoart, Annabelle Fiorillo, and Alyssa Koontz all scored for the Polar Bears.
The Nick’s Luncheonette Dragons played twice this weekend. On Saturday, the Dragons took on Porto Funeral Homes, winning, 7-4. Joel Forbs-Wolfe, Alexander Hulse and Mark Zhuno were the stars of the day. On Sunday, the Dragons fell to the Jason Ranalli Stars, 4-3. Ahmed Hashem, Jaden Prates and Holden Napoletano fought hard in the loss. Sweet Relief Catering picked up a 9-4 victory over Stars Ice Cream. Junior Salguero playedwell in goal with Jostin Rimarez scoring five goals. Caleb Awuah picked up two goals, and Elijah Reddick and David Christensen scoring one goal apiece.
