The West Haven U19 baseball team opened the final regular season stretch with a 12-2 loss against New Haven at Piurek Field. West Haven fell behind early and never got back on track in the loss.
Trailing, 3-0, in the first on five walks and an error, West Haven got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Cam Cruz reached on an error to score a run.
New Haven added three more in the second, but West Haven had a chance to get closer when Zach Bouteiller drew a two-out walk and Mike Madera singled to center, but both were left stranded.
The Westies got within 6-2 in the third as Cruz reached on a two-out error, Haygen Axelrod walked, and Justin Wilson singled to load the bases. A walk to Lucas Forgette forced in Cruz, but West Haven again stranded runners on base.
The inability to get closer hurt as New Haven scored five times with two outs in the fifth.
Josh Osborne and Haygen Axelrod also had hits in the contest for West Haven.
After rain forced postponements, West Haven finally got back on the field and posted a 12-1 victory over New Haven. Ray Gilbert led the offense with two hits and two runs batted in.
Leading, 5-1, in the third, West Haven blew the game open with seven runs. Jacob Fowler singled to score Cruz, an error and a wild pitch scored two more runs, Haygen Axelrod knocked in a run with a double, a double steal scored Osborne, and Gilbert’s double knocked in Jeremiah Douglas and Madera for a 12-1 lead.
The Westies fell in the nightcap, 7-3, as they managed just three hits in the contest. Cruz knocked in a pair with a double in the sixth, but West Haven never got closer after scoring three in the inning.
West Haven concluded the regular season with a 6-4 loss to the Yanks. Trailing 2-0, West Haven scored four times in the bottom of the inning on two walks, two singles, and an error.
