Kristina Bizyayev is grateful she and her family are finally in the United States. “Thank God we are here and we are safe,” she said.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, it wasn’t long before missiles reached the Bizyayev’s town of Kharkiv, destroying part of their apartment complex. “Three days were enough for us to understand that either we leave, or we will die.” Kristina Bizyayev said.
The family left Ukraine on March 1 and spent the rest of the month traveling to Moldova, Romania, Austria, Germany and Switzerland before making it to West Haven, where they’re staying with Gaye Hyre and her family in Allingtown.
The Bizyayev’s connected with Hyre through an online service helping Ukrainian refugees find shelter in the US. Local churches and synagogues supplied them with a crib, diapers and other needed items..
Last week, West Haven Town & City Clerk Patricia Horvath hosted a welcome reception in her office for the Bizyayev’s. City Hall employees stepped in with donations as well as pizzas donated by Zuppardi’s. Clothing and toys were donated by Vio’s and a beautiful arrangement of blue and yellow balloons, the colors of the Ukrainian flag were donated by Zulecia Corsi.
“This is a prime example of what West Haven does for those in need,” said Planning & Zoning Commissioner Steven R. Mullins, who attended the reception. Mullins has been instrumental in organizing and participating “Free Ukraine” demonstrations throughout the State of Connecticut.
Mullins says that as of right now, the family is not in need of any additional donations. “The boys, (ages one, four and six) have enough clothes and toys for now. The family is very appreciative to the people of West Haven for helping them get started,” Mullins said.
