On many a summer night the roar of engines could be heard along the shore as thousands came out to the West Haven Speedway to see such favorites as Bob Wilson and Jack Seither. Also known as Donovan Field, the covered grandstand surrounded a site that once housed West Haven High School football and baseball games. Years before there was an idea to play Hillhouse at Yale Bowl on Thanksgiving, the game was played at the field off Beach Street. The park, like so much else that was part of the Savin Rock area was closed and swept away with urban renewal.

There are a couple of Donovan Field (West Haven Speedway) items on EBAY. Also, I have some box office statements from 1946, but no car or driver photographs.

I have fond memories of West Haven Speedway and the amusement park from the late ‘50’s to the ‘60’s. My (step)dad, Jiggs Peters, raced ARDC midgets there. I remember water would occasionally seep through in turn three, I believe, when the tide was just right. I was around 9 the first time I went there. Great little track just like Freeport, Islip, and Riverhead.
