The West Haven Park-Rec Wizards are gearing up to start their spring season on Monday April 23. Registration is now open at the West Haven Parks and Recreation Department. The Wizards spring swim team is an eight week long season taught in a clinic-type atmosphere open to children of all ages and designed to teach children proficiency in the four competitive swimming strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Swimmers are introduced to the basics of all four strokes and trained to improve skill and speed.
The coaching staff is dedicated to improving all swimmers, as well as teaching the principles of sportsmanship, fair play and team spirit. The program is perfect for both children who have some experience in swimming through lessons and are considering the competitive fall season and veterans looking to refine their technique. Practice runs Monday through Friday, with a minimum attendance requirement of three practices per week.
All new swimmers will be assigned a permanent practice time after tryouts at the pool on Monday April 23 at 5:30 p.m. at the West Haven High School Pool. Practices will run 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 beginning Tuesday, April 24. All swimmers assigned practice times based on age and ability.
New swimmers ages 8 and under are required to complete one lap unassisted to make the team. New swimmers 9 and over are required to complete two laps unassisted in order to make the team.
