Local partners are once again supporting the third annual, “West Haven ROCKS WHEAT” food drive on Saturday, November 12th at the Off-Shore Restaurant & Lounge parking lot from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Organized by former Councilman Barry Lee Cohen, the event brings together local businesses and community organizations.
Cohen extended special thanks to Yale West Campus and Mark Laoue, owner of Off-Shore Restaurant, for providing the event’s volunteers, transportation, and venue. He also noted the generosity of partners that have and plan to contribute again this year to support WHEAT.
“I couldn’t have received a faster, more enthusiastic response from Yale West and Mark to once again support this drive that has taken on special significance this year. There is a growing population of families, senior citizens, veterans, and others with limited incomes that are feeling the effects of inflation to fund essentials,” Cohen said.
Located at 852 Jones Hill Road, Off-Shore Restaurant’s parking lot provides an easy and quick opportunity to donate non-perishable food items to the West Haven Emergency Assistance Taskforce (WHEAT). Also contributing again this year is Apple Oil Company, Star Distributors, and the West Haven Police Union Loca 895, with others to follow.
Yale West Campus team members and other volunteers will request that drivers pop open their trunks for quick retrieval of food donations. Checks made payable to WHEAT will also be collected. All monetary contributions are appreciated and will help feed Westies in need.
As stated on the WHEAT website, food items highly coveted this month include peanut butter, tuna fish, cereal, pasta, jelly, tomato sauce, soups, canned fruits, and veggies. All nonperishable food items are greatly appreciated.
